Reboot Review

May 09, 2009 07:58

Went to the Star Trek reboot last night.
PROs: Excellent action pic, pretty people, pretty SFX.
CONs: Cardboard-cutout villain who wants to destroy things because things get destroyed and a Starfleet officer who breaks all the rules until it becomes convenient to not break the rules.
Generally, Star Trek reframed as Die Hard: good action, no soul.

OK, the real spoiler bits: Spock + Uhura was an interesting change and I liked how they'd implied Kirk + Uhura in the trailers. Spock + Spock was classic Star Trek and, unfortunately, just showed up how it really should be done. Note to Kirk: succeeding in the end doesn't keep you from being an ass in the middle.

I just realized what this really reminds me of: they've made "Quantum of Solace." Kirk isn't smooth anymore, like Craig as Bond. I forgave Shatner being an ass because he was cool about it. Pine was merely eager, like a puppy.

review, movie
