SUMMARY: Meiling is feeling the loss of friends over the summer break.
[ "It's nothing new," she keeps telling herself. Coming back to school this time to discover that some of her friends were gone isn't new at all. Not for someone who's been here for as many years as Meiling has. The school has a good turnover rate, despite being such an ideal (to her) learning environment. Parents change their minds, students change their minds, emergencies happen, marriages, internships, early employment, illness, deaths in the family... All perfectly good reasons for friends to just not be there when she returned.
But this time? It really got to her. Or maybe it's just that, after all these years, she can't keep up the appearance that it doesn't hurt even a small bit.
It doesn't stop her in her tracks, but she does pause on occasion to just sit down, looking and feeling drained. Snacking in the lobby, napping under her favorite tree, and jogging -- none of that really gave her the energy she needed to face the day. "Maybe I should just go back to bed..." ]
