Since I'm still up, and it's technically the 16th by now, I may as well go ahead and post my Happy Birthday Present for
quintenttsy. The upcoming podfic is All Her Fault. If it weren't for her influence on my reading habits (What? Stalking my way through everything she's ever written or recorded, all lurker-y style, totally counts as her influence on my reading habits. Totally), I never would have known that Skippy was anything other than my favorite brand of peanut butter (NO-ONE ever chooses Jiff. The commercials are lying to you. Jiff tastes like ass, and does not deserve to desecrate good bread with it's butt-flavored-ness). For those of you who want to continue this ignorant bliss, feel free to ignore the idea that Skippy could also be the (somehow adorable....I don't understand!) paring of Mike Carden (of The Academy Is...) and Kevin Jonas (of Disney's The Jonas Brothers).
That's right, people. For the sake of Happy Birthday Greetings, I have committed Jonas podfic ;-)
But, never fear. It's not all innocent baby deer meets classic bad boy in a shower of rainbows and sunshine (though those fics do have their place, and it is a place that is near to my heart) - this podfic is actually kind of fantastically twisted.
See, there's this story, maybe you've heard of it -
It's Like the Pied Piper (Only It's a Little Bit More Like a Cult), written by
queenofhell. And this story spawned
a comm, and an entire universe, and over 70 other stories by more than 40 authors. Why is this story so intriguing? Well. Let me share with you the words of
queenofhell, who started the whole thing...
"So, once upon a time, way back in the olden days of popslash, kel and lise wrote a story about Justin Timberlake and his scary cult called
flesh mechanic: not an AU. It creeped the hell out of people and became an instant classic in the fandom.
A couple of years later, many of the people who had originally been into popslash were lured over to the eyeliner-covered, girl-jean-draped emo bandom. One day,
gigantic made a post about Patrick Stump's obvious Stockholm Syndrome, and the inevitable comparisons to flesh mechanic were made. And then I decided to write a snippet. Just one little snippet, about Pete indoctrinating Ryan Ross into his cult, and then it turned into a full-length story called It's Like the Pied Piper (Only It's a Little Bit More Like a Cult). And then that turned into several stories, and then a bunch of other people started writing stories, and now here we are." - (quote taken from
here)
And why should you care? Besides the fact that the Cult 'Verse is an awesomely brain-trippy 'verse, that will have you mentally scrambling over your every cd purchase/mp3 download/t-shirt purchase/concert attendance for traces of brainwashing; my birthday podfic for
quintenttsy is but a very small snippet of this seriously creepy 'verse. I've always had a fondness for stories that take the Good Guys and twist them up inside, make them into Serial Killers or Vampires or Mad Scientists or Demons or general Bad Guys. Who could be a more prime example of a Twisted Good Guy than one of Disney's very wholesome Jonas Brothers? (This is not a rhetorical question - feel free to rec me other stories of impressive Good Guys Gone Bad. I will shower you in thanks!) The fact that
quintenttsy and I first met over a conversation comparing Disney RPF and Disney Animation in podficcing is just a little bit of extra glee for me with this one.
Disney Is Not A Cult (Not Yet), written by
mizubyte, clocks in at just under 15 minutes long. The Intro/Outro music is a song called
Stripped, as performed by Shiny Toy Guns (I really liked how the lyrics basically described Kevin's indoctrination process - though it did get me worried once again about the potential towards my own susceptibility). This story bears warnings for dubious consent in a sexual situation, brainwashing, and cults. You can find the mp3 of Disney Is Not A Cult (Not Yet)
over here (thank you,
paraka, for hosting me). Or! You can stream this story, by clicking below:
Don't forget to wish
quintenttsy a Happy Birthday, and to leave some love for
mizubyte, too!
