Pod Aware Day Five: Sound Effects
These days, more and more podfics have special effects added for clarity, atmosphere or to add new layers of meaning. Everything from music, to voice filters, to sound effects. To find out more information on podfic and special effects, check out Pod Aware on DW, LJ or Tumblr.
If you've listened to any of my podfics in X-Men First Class, Avengers or Iron Man, Southern Vampire Mysteries, Stargate: Atlantis, or Discworld, you've probably noticed that I enjoy sound effects. I like playing around in GarageBand, poking at all the different filters and reverb settings and strange shiny Buttons That Do Stuff. Stories with telepathy, radio or phone conversations, robots? I've got a sound effect for that!
Stop the Presses, written by cofax7 (who I found through the Blanket Permission List - seriously, BEST THING EVER), is a really interesting piece in a whole lot of ways. It's a story about a minor Stargate: Atlantis character, told from the perspective of an original character, about a possible future didn't happen in the series, through the medium of a newspaper article, with color commentary added in the form of accompanying editor's notes. It's actually a perfect story for collaboration, since there's two different characters with distinct voices....but I didn't think of that until just now.
Yeah.
Poor planning on my part, that one.
Instead, I conquered the Two Distinct Voices problem by reading the news article bits in a measured style, and the editor's notes in a more conversational tone - and then, adding All The Vocal Filters. It's kind of awesome, if I do say so myself.
