I have tweeted a tease yesterday. I have been working on a Fannish project for the last seven years and can finally say success. I am part of Otakon staff for this year as part of Staff Pool. It is where many starting staffers begin in Otakon's chain.
The strangest thing is I don't know when this became a goal of mine. The closest thing to an educated guess was about Otakon 2006 someone on staff said why aren't you staff. I had always assumed that you had to work 30-40 hours in a year as a gofer to even get two staffers to nominate you (most I had done was 22). I think it also has to do with it being my first con and my hometown con. That I think is the biggest thing that makes this special to me.
Staff Pool is basically a starter pool of staff for the convention. It is where new staff go explore and find out the best place for them on the staff. This should be interesting in the sense that I should go to who knows where and at what time. I also will get an understanding of how a big convention does run. This con runs on a total of about 575-600 staffers in any given year. Anime USA runs a staff of about 350.
It probably means I won't be able to do WorldCon or Dragon Con at this point in time. I don't know how that affects me and Anime USA. I will try a year on both before I force myself to choose one. I am low enough on the Otakon totem pole that I can probably do both. I don't have to make many meetings (except for the key meetings like Crash meeting and staff election meeting), so I don't have to travel as much as I do for Anime USA. I also have the advantage of them being in Metro Baltimore, so I save on the travel costs at least. Let's see if this idea works or not.
