The costs of being a con runner

This weekend will be dead for me. As tempted as I am to see Iron Man 2, I am even more tempted after tomorrow morning WW and some chores to clean or watch FMA: Brotherhood instead. This is my next four weekends after this weekend ( Read more... )

People know that I am a high level con runner and you can't do those sort of things as a veteran con runner.
Why not? I've asked for various autographs of people whose work I admire, including the people for whom I'm GoH liaison at Westercon 64 next year.

It is different to do that at a con your attending. For A-Kon, I am staffing that con. There is an ethic that you really shouldn't ask for autographs when you are working at a con. I may not have made that clear in my original post.

Hm. This is an ethic that must have somehow sprung out of anime cons on their own, or some regional attitude, because I've never heard of it before in all my years of con-running and attending. Someone might be too busy working on the con to get any autographs they might want, but not constrained by some social convention. (Pun only vaguely intentional.)

Part of that is I will be too busy for Autographs. It could be inability to relax, which I know is one of my fannish issues. I think part of it comes from some anime cons viewpoint on Guest Relations (at least Anime USA's view on their Guest Relations staffs).

You don't want to come off as a fanboy to the Anime Voice Actors or Japanese Guests. It seems almost that you don't like celebrity is something that is looked upon in Anime Fandom Guest Relations people.

The year Amano was our guest all the staff, including the Personal Assistant (guest liaison) got autographs. Amano specifically asked if the staff wanted autographs and his translator seemed surprised when told the staff had been told to leave Amano alone so I'm guessing that at least Japanese guests are expecting to be asked.

Those who wanted all got autographs from any of the other guests as well. Ditto the next three years... including t wo guests who tracked me down to sign my stuff before they left *shrug*

Maybe, it is more part of Northeast anime con culture than I thought. If my con got Amano, I would ask any staffer (guests or other wise) to go through the normal autograph sessions at the end of the line. I wouldn't even think to do a seperate staff only autograph session for him. Anime USA also has over 200 staffers working it, so that does make things different.
