New Orchids

We went to an orchid show yesterday. I've been looking forward to it for quite awhile. We had gone several years ago to the same show, same place. It got really crowded really really fast (we were there just after the 10am opening & the parking lot was almost full). It got to the point where we couldn't walk around, the show area was fortunately separate from the vendors because we couldn't make it around to see the small vendor booths (there were about 10 vendors---really small!!) so I can imagine the show side, which was crowded when we went through before we hit the vendor space, got worse. Not good for C's back having to stand while waiting for people to get out of the way so we could try to get in. She doesn't usually even try in those circumstances, it hurts too much for her to stand in one place.

We were there long enough to pick up some orchid food (1 for flowering, 1 for growing periods) & 2 orchids. We picked up an odontoglossum species, don't know the actual name of this one. It is in flower with 1 spike & the flowers are just starting to open. They flowers are a striking deep maroon red with yellow highlights. I also got myself a masdevallia falcata (hopefully the flower will look something like this .) Picts below.

Here is the odontoglossum flower. It's missing a petal on the lower right. We don't know if it happened at the show, when we were bringing it home from the show or when I was putting it in the tall glass flower vase to protect most of it & create some humidity for the plant.

Here is my masdevallia sitting on the bookcase by the front door. These are cool-loving orchids that like a lot of moisture so I want to try it there to see if it is better for the plant. It didn't have any flowers nor spikes on the plant when we bought it. It is mature enough to flower so I'll start feeding it (& all our orchids) the flowering fertiliser in the next fortnight since we are in spring. I fed them all (except the one already flowering) with the growing fertiliser yesterday.

There's another orchid show next week in another city, we might go to that one too. Maybe I will pick up another masdevallia but one that is in flower!

So some sad news. Basically, I am going to have to give up the dream of selling cinnamon rolls. It will stay a dream. It's just too damned expensive to do it & we would have to sell about 200 for each session in the kitchen. I just don't have the time or energy to make that many, let alone finding the markets for them. And the 200 doesn't actually take into account tax on the kitchen, labour, gas for delivery, liability insurance...... Due to food prep/sale requirements we have to use a registered kitchen (can't use our own kitchen). The hire kitchen is about $35.00NZ (not including tax) per hour & the buns take about 7 hours all up (includes clean up & set up). So yeah, not happening at least unless I either win the lottery or am made redundant (& probably not even if made redundant). Oh well, it's a dream and it is ok to have them.

It's getting late so keeping this short. Bed time before hitting work tomorrow & will be a busy one.
