Anata and I went for lunch at Tai Hing Congee and Noodle House in Richmond. It's a very small store, almost hole-in-the-wall type, but it's got quite a following and seems pretty well established. The parking lot seems to present a challenge for quite a few Richmond drivers, but otherwise it's a somewhat busy plaza.
I ordered a cold milk tea with my food, and the balance was just right. Not too sweet. Note that there is an additional $0.50 for cold vs hot drinks.
I ordered a serving of their "Chinese doughnut wrapped in noodle". I really liked their presentation. Thinly sliced, with the assorted sauces (hoisin, peanut, and sesame seed topping) for your own control and balance. It's a very smart move and definitely more healthy too because you can make sure you're not having too much of the sodium/glucose intake. The inside doughnut part unfortunately wasn't too good because it was kind of dense and a little oily. It wasn't quite the light and fluffy doughnut I was hoping for. Also, because the pieces were sliced so thinly, sometimes the noodle would unwrap or fall off the piece. I didn't mind it, but some other people may find it cumbersome to eat.
Anata ordered their beef brisket with wonton noodle. He was impressed by the soup and the purity of the broth, but wasn't really loving all the fatty bits of his meat. The portion size looked small at first but he said it was very filling and there was a lot of noodle in the bowl. Overall he found it very good and really liked how it was natural without added MSG.
I ordered the satay beef noodle. The broth was really very natural and "plain" in that there were no added seasonings like all those MSG based sauces. Of course the satay sauce had a little MSG which was unavoidable, but really I was impressed with how well the food was handled here. The beef was really nice and tender, and the noodles were a very generous helping in the bowl. I felt like I was eating a bowl of neverending noodles! They were done well - slight chewiness but still soft.
Anata and I really enjoyed our lunch here. The food is really well done without MSG and it's really great how they let their customers control the sauces by giving you sauces for dishes as well as a set tray on the table (soy, vinegar, chili, pepper). It's also super cheap! Really good value and quality. Definite like. I'm bringing my dad here!
