My friend really wanted some vietnamese sandwiches the other day, and she insisted we go to Au Petit Cafe. I've never been here before, but she's had their sandwiches there and really loves them, so off we went.
We ordered three dac biet banh mi, one chicken banh mi, and I also got a salted lime soda. I was a little disappointed with the size for the price paid:
Yep, a regular sized styrofoam cup. The soda was delicious, refreshing, and the right balance of the acid from the lime, sugar, and salt, but it was a small consolation for the portion size. Maybe if you order to stay they'll give you a bigger cup...
Sorry, I accidentally cut off the prices. The dac biet was $4.50 if memory serves me correctly, and the chicken $4.00 I think.
My friend's chicken was shredded and nicely marinated. It was warm and juicy, with kind of sweet and savoury flavours. With the slight acid from the vegetables, it was a real treat.
The bread is really awesome. It's fresh, warm, slightly crusty on the edges, but very soft and with a bit of chewiness. I think it's probably the best bread for banh mi that I've had yet.
The dac biet's meatball isn't the patty that I'm used to, but more like a rich layer of ground pork that's been seasoned with lots of yum. It made for a bit of wetness but because of the freshness of the bread, eating it right away meant it wasn't soggy. It's a possibility if you have it the next day or something though, so I wouldn't recommend it.
The banh mi are awesome, bread about the best I've had. It's a little more expensive than Ba Le, so I think Ba Le still reigns King in my book, but this one is an amazing runner up with great flavours and quality.
