Niagara Falls, part the second.

After our trip on the Maid of the Mist, we headed up the river to the White Water Walk, a 1/4 mile boardwalk that runs along the Whirlpool Rapids. The Whirlpool Rapids are a set of class 6 rapids - too dangerous to navigate. In the 1920s, it was a popular spot for daredevils to strap themselves into a barrel and go trip turning through the rapids. My favorite one of these was Maud Willard, a daredevil who made the trip in a barrel with her fox terrier. Her barrel got caught in the whirlpool and could not be retrieved for over 6 hours. She died, but her dog lived by sticking his nose out of the only air hole in the barrel, cutting off his owners air supply.

The boardwalk itself was quite picturesque.

I wanted to capture the chop of the rapids.

But, of course, I couldn’t resist some of the long exposure photography that is so popular all over flickr.

I took a brief video to show how fast and loud the water really is.

to be continued ….
