Although I hate the fact that winter is approaching, I still really love fall. I hate that the days are shorter and the mornings are chilly (because how hard is it to get out of bed on a cold morning?) but I love the cooler weather and the changing leaves. Biking to temple last Friday evening, I saw some really beautiful fall foliage. I wish I'd had my good camera with me. I'm going to try to go bike-riding again soon and take some pictures of it before it's gone. As I said last year, we never got any fall foliage in Louisiana, so I'm super excited whenever I see any.
This weekend was unusually hot for the end of October, and I decided to make the most of it. On Saturday, we drove downtown for a cheese-dip festival. (En route, she was making negative comments as usual - "What a stupid thing to have a festival for! They'll probably all be out by the time we get there!" - but once there, I think she enjoyed it.) Local restaurants all served their own cheese dips, and the idea was for people to vote on whichever they liked best. The proceeds all went to a good cause, and best of all, the small business where I work was one of the sponsors, so I was lucky enough to get two free tickets! We got there kinda late in the afternoon, so some of booths had run out of cheese dip, but a lot were still serving and it was so yummy. I voted for one that had barbecue sauce and chicken in it. I also dripped cheese dip all over my nice Halloween shirt... but I guess that was kinda unavoidable.
It was held in a park with a lot of cool sculptures and photo ops, and I enjoyed taking pictures almost as much I enjoyed eating the cheese dips!
Isn't this sculpture odd? A wall with several fish heads on one side...
...and fishtails on the other side.
I loved this sculpture of a raven with a pile of keys. It reminded me of Edgar Allan Poe.
And how cool is this crazy bird sculpture?
This huge... head-thing was a decoration on one of the cheese-dip booths. Check out the guy in the sombero behind it!
Part of the park had pieces of glass mixed in the with gravel, which I thought was really neat.
It was really fun, but between the warm weather and the spicy cheese dips, it was almost too hot for me. We had to go for ice-cream afterwards to help our mouths cool down!
And since this was probably the last really warm weekend of the whole year, today me and some other animal shelter volunteers took the opportunity to give much-needed baths to as many dogs as we could. The shelter has a few really useful dog bathtubs, but when you're dealing with big strong dogs who aren't keen on having a bath, of course you're still going to get wet. I was soaked by the time we were done, but it was so hot that it actually felt pretty good! I've never expected to stay clean at the dog park, anyway.
My current rescue inhaler has lasted for over months so far, and it still has a lot of puffs left in it! I need to pay attention to how much more I use it in colder weather. I'm estimating that I'll probably need another one to see me through the winter.
