I know this blog is turning into one long complaint about the winter weather. But remember how in my last post, I'd hoped that spring was on its way? Well, guess what I woke up to this morning -- a ton of snow and ice on the ground!!! UGH! I was stupid enough to go into work anyway, only to discover that almost all of my coworkers had stayed home! (This is one of the drawbacks of living so close to work.) I would've stayed home if I'd known they were going to, and I spent all day just wanting to kick myself! The only highlight of the day was ripping the February page off my calendar and singing loudly, because there was no one around to hear me, "February is nothing now! Another month must begin!" a la Jean Valjean. A few other blurbs of recent news...
~ Sara and I (and Athena, via speakerphone) had fun watching the Oscars last night -- even though I was seriously bummed that no child actress attended this year! I bought junk food beforehand (rotel dip, which I hadn't had in years, and gummi worms) and munched away through the whole thing. The highlights for me were Darlene Love bursting into song during her acceptance speech -- so awesomely unexpected! -- and realizing that Athena didn't know Liza Minelli was Judy Garland's daughter until Sara and I told her.
~ Mom came to visit the weekend before last. I was kinda dreading it, but it went a lot better than her last visit, for two big reasons: 1) She didn't stay at our apartment, but a hotel, and 2) I got the keys! I think Mom finally realized that it stresses out all of us when she drives in this city, so I did all the driving, and I didn't mind at all. It was waaay easier than trying to direct Mom. We went to the independent movie theater and saw Nebraska (enjoyed it); between all the Oscar noms, I saw that, Prisoners (did not like), Saving Mr. Banks, and Star Trek Into Darkness. I'm planning to watch August: Osage County soon, though.
~ The small business where I work participates in Bowl for Kids Sake, the main fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters, which means that one Friday after work, we all went bowling. I was not looking forward to it, because I'm not very good at human interaction, especially in loud, unfamiliar environments (and the bowling alley was loud; I spent most of the evening wanting to punch the announcer). But I kinda felt obligated, and besides, it was for a very good cause and honestly, it wasn't that bad. I was probably the worst bowler on the team, but hey, they gave us free pizza!
~ I'm still really enjoying volunteering at the animal shelter. I went there on Saturday, and I'm glad, because it was our last warm day for a while. Cassidy, who's a lot like in Dessa in how timid and shy she is, let me get close to her and take her out to the dog-park for the first time! The shelter also seems to have a great adoption rate; dogs I spend time with there are getting adopted all the time! The adoption-mobile is going to be at a local parade later this month, and I'm looking forward to helping out with that.
~ I'm still crocheting kippot; my last two were a smiley-face pattern, mailed to a friend at my hometown temple whose FaceBook profile pic is a smiley-face, and an American flag pattern, given to a friend at the temple here who served in the Army. But I really need to finish off my current plarn mat! The floor of my room is such a mess of plastic bags!
Random P.S. A funny FaceBook post from my rabbi this morning: "I'm dreaming of a white Purim... Wait, no. No, I'm not." I definitely share that sentiment.
