Summertime, and the fandom is easy...

Jul 16, 2011 01:06

The whole family, plus friends, is heading out to San Diego Comic-Con in a few days. I’ve got an extra 4-day + preview night youth (17 and under) pass available for $50 if any of you wants it, but if not, I’m just going to request a refund. I expect to be completely overwhelmed by the Total Fandom Experience of it all. Wish me luck.

It’s already begun, in some ways... )

One of these times you go down to SoCal for these cons I need to make you stop in Monterey and take me with you! I love these chatty posts about the family and cons, so don't skimp on your Comic-Con reports next week! Have lots of fun!

I was so over/underwhelmed last year that I didn't to a con report for San Diego. We'll see what happens this year.

I'd recommend you plan to come to WonderCon in SF next year. It's easily train-accessible, and still of an almost manageable size!

Thanks for the good wishes!

Have a great time at the comic con. I envy you all your cultural goings on. I never seem to get to do stuff like that.

Also, I did know that was Robin Sachs in Galaxy Quest. The voice is a dead giveaway.

We have long dry spells where I think, "Why do I bother to live in the big(ish) city if I never leave the house?" Then, there'll be a whirlwind of activity, like lately. After that I feel all virtuous for taking advantage of the cultural amenities, and go back to the internet with a clear conscience. Heh.

I only really see the birds that are in my backyard, which include no ducks or swans, so you have the best of it there! Thanks for the good wishes!

I love the Oregon Shakespearean Festival! We used to go every year; I try to go every couple of years these days as it's a bit of a drive now. You must have been in one of the indoor theaters if there were support beam problems; I love the outdoor one best!

I went a lot as a kid, and then started up again once McDiva was old enough to go. It's really amazing what they accomplish in repertory. I hope this year isn't too much of a blow for them. They were already having sales on summertime Shakespeare productions, which was unusual, and then they lost the Bowmer Theatre for a couple of weeks over the busiest July 4th play-going season. So sad. I really want them to be around so I can take my grandkids, you know?

::nods:: I think a lot of my love of shakespeare comes from seeing the plays performed instead of just trying to read them. It makes so much difference!

I had planned to go down this august, but didn't have a specific play in mind. I guess I'll have to see what's available, but now I kind of want to go to the help keep shakespeare festival going!

Did you guys go see Coraline? I had no idea that they'd set it in Ashland (I'd read the book, but didn't hear the details of the movie until I went to see it) but it was fun to see things like the festival ticket office in cartoon version! I gather from PDX friends it's because Phil Knight (of Nike; Oregon is a small, small world! His sister is a good friend of my mom) donated money to make the movie.

We did see Coraline. The studio that did it is in Portland, so that's why all the Oregon references (subtle though they were) and the Phil Knight investment. The success of that film has been good for the animators in the area, who had been hard hit when Will Vinton Studios collapsed (partly due to Phil Knight, if I'm remembering correctly). It is indeed a small world!

I definitely recommend The Imaginary Invalid if you head to OSF. I've heard good things about Pirates of Penzance, too. I suspect you'll enjoy whatever they have on offer.

Man, you've had a fantastic summer so far. I've already informed Craig that we're going to Comic Con next year no matter what. I have to experience it at least once.

Don't be fussed about not realizing that was Robin Sachs. I've known for ages, but must not be too attuned to his voice because I can't tell it's him. I only know because sadbhyl pointed it out.

It's been almost as fun as yours, I think! (Looks like you survived the Cat ride. Hurrah ( ... )
