Summertime, and the fandom is easy...

The whole family, plus friends, is heading out to San Diego Comic-Con in a few days. I’ve got an extra 4-day + preview night youth (17 and under) pass available for $50 if any of you wants it, but if not, I’m just going to request a refund. I expect to be completely overwhelmed by the Total Fandom Experience of it all. Wish me luck.

It’s already begun, in some ways. On Thursday (Friday?) I attended the midnight show of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 with MiAmor, McDiva, and ten of her friends, most of them in costume. Naturally, this put us in the mood for more Alan Rickman, so we watched Galaxy Quest this evening to feed the craving. It’s just as marvelous as I remember, but I noticed Robin Sachs’ name in the opening credits this time. Did y’all know it was Ethan Rayne playing the villain Saris underneath all those prosthetics? I sure didn’t. That, of course, reminded us to watch the second Torchwood Miracle Day, but alas there was no Robin Sachs talking head shots to thrill us this week. We did get Dichen Lachman (Sierra from Dollhouse), so the massive Fandom Collision of 2011 continues unabated. ¡Yay!

I’ve been having a wonderful summer, after a pretty darned stressful spring. I’ve been to lots of plays, all of which have been amazing on some level. I finally got to see Stephen Sondheim’s Assassins, which two theatre companies staged in San Francisco this year. I guess I can see why people think it’s too weird, but it’s right up my alley, what with the history, the comedy, the tragedy, the amazing self delusion, and some fantastic female characters. My sister-in-law took me to Hugh Jackman’s one man show, and that was a hoot and a half. I took her to see an incredible dance performance while she was here. Keep an eye out for Darius Drooh, if you’re a So You Think You Can Dance watcher. He’s one of McDiva’s classmates and an amazing artist.

In June, McDiva and I headed up to Oregon, and got to see a terrifically funny production of Moliere’s The Imaginary Invalid at the Oregon Shakespearean Festival the day before they had to shut down the theatre due to a support beam failing. On the night of the summer solstice, a very cool Portland group, Original Practice Shakespeare Festival, put on A Midsommer Nights Dreame in a park three blocks from Dear Old Dad’s place. It was the most rollicking, fresh version of the play that I’ve ever seen, taken directly from the First Folio, I’m told. Their generator ran out of juice with a few minutes left in the show, and the audience lighted the performers with their cell phones. That’s what I call audience participation.

McDiva and I went with my very cool aunt and uncle to see an entertaining klezmer band, called Vagabond Opera while in Portland, which I highly recommend. They do a Weimar-era cabaret sort of thing, complete with very chaste burlesque dancers and dueling cellos. I suppose I must now cop to taking my 15-year-old to a bar to watch strippers. It was an all-ages show! I swear! (Actually, I’m pretty sure I’m in the clear, as McDiva decided it was cool, and her easily embarrassed sensibilities were not threatened. Whew!) I’m still hoping to get it together to see Tales of the City, the Musical before the end of the run later this month.

McDiva went to New York City with Dear Old Dad for two weeks, and they went to many, many plays, including How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, starring Daniel Radcliffe. “He should’ve got the Tony,” grumbled McDiva afterward. She also liked Jerusalem, in which the lead actually did win a Tony, I think. She really didn’t like The Addam’s Family, which she pronounced “for tourists”. She also got to see the Alexander McQueen exhibit as well as Harry Potter: the Exhibition, which was chockfull of props, sets, and costumes.

In addition, she got to spend quality time with my sister, her husband, and my only nephew. I wish I could have gone. But while she was away, MiAmor and I got through most of Season 3 of True Blood, which McDiva is not allowed to watch, a few more Farscape episodes, went out to a dinner wherein we actually sat down rather than ordering at a counter, and we went to a couple of R-rated movies! Who says we old folks don’t know how to party? Oh yeah.

Also, I just found out that a couple of my things have been nominated at Round 24 of the Sunnydale Memorial Fanfiction Awards. My Harmony fic, Haven’t Seen Your Face For A While, was nominated in the Songfic category, and my Ring On It ‘verse was nominated for Best Series. It’s so very kind of someone to think of me! A couple of my favorite ‘verses are also nommed in the Best Series category, so it’s a real honor to be alongside them. The deadline for nominating is July 31, btw.
