A/N: I have never, ever managed to write a drabble. This is exactly 200 words. For me, that's an achievement in restraint ;)
When she was a human, she was homeless. Uncomfortable even in *that* body. She wasn’t surprised she existed afterwards: she’d always known there was more to her than those arms, legs, that torso - she considered it dispassionately, in its pieces.
The first time she got topside she tried being male, to see if that would make her comfortable. But the thing about these occupied bodies was the jostling for space - and that one, he was whiny and irritating, more tenuous than he’d looked from the outside. He fought her. That’s why she kept moving around, body to body - a change being as good as rest, and she accepted now that rest was something eternally beyond her reach.
The coma patient was a stroke of genius. She secretly acknowledged Sam for giving her the push to try it. She *liked* this body, it was young and strong and pretty and capable and pleasing, and for the first time since she was born all those hundreds of years ago,Ruby rebelled in her selfhood. She touched herself, charmed. Delighted. She was all herself, and she fitted, fighting with nothing inside herself.
She wanted to keep it a long time. She was home.
