I'm still pondering the meaning of this one...
Somehow or other, Star Wars came up in conversation the other day, and Himself mentioned that the Empire really should have won; he just couldn't see how the Alliance pulled it off. I, being me, replied that the Alliance was, obviously, fighting for a cause they believed in, and that tends to make the weak stronger. Basically, that they wanted it more. He repeated, "But the Empire really should have won. More troops, better weapons... they had a Death Star!" As if their victory were a fait accompli, and only some weird twist in the space-time continuum made the Alliance victory possible. I, still being me - as if I'd manage to be someone else - said the Death Star and all that didn't matter, it's about the cause, not the technology - and I'd have been in there slugging for the Alliance. Have to throw in my lot with the Eewoks, they're just too cute. He gave me that sly, slightly predatory sideways look that means "I cannot believe I just heard you say that," and said that the Eewoks simply had to go. Me, starting to get his point and not fully accepting that I was hearing what I was hearing, replied "You can't be serious. You'd have fought for the Empire? You'd have followed Vader instead of the Jedi?" Again, the sideways look. "Darth Vader was useless," or something to that effect, was his comment. At that moment, I got a clear glimpse into his twisty mind. Hell no - he wouldn't have followed Vader. Given the chance, he'd have been giving Vader orders. Turns out he doesn't think much of the Emperor, either. Somehow, I find myself with a champion of the Dark Side. You'd think the fact that Darth Maul is one of his favorite Lego Star Wars characters would be a clue.
Against all odds, I, rebel supporter and Eewok fan, wound up with a Lord of the Sith. Maybe there is something to that "opposites attract" thing after all.
