Not much going on, birthday or no. My family and friends are all in distant places, so the most I did was to have a drink at the local brewpub. I'd go there more often, but it's kind of pricey.

Today is my brother's 56th birthday.

It's also the anniversary of our mother's murder.

It's also the 75th anniversary of the flag-raising at Iwo Jima.

Today's my 58th birthday. Whoop-tee-doo.

If I were more in funds, I might have done more. As things stand, though, I may go down to Ames or even Des Moines this Friday.

Today, in 1452, the future King Richard III was born at Fotheringay Castle, which is also known as the execution site of Mary, Queen of Scots.

Unfortunately, Fotheringay was pretty much scavenged away for its stone during Stuart times, so there's almost nothing to see there.

Fifty-seven years ago today, I was born. On mature reflection, this seems to have been a bad decision, at least in light of subsequent developments.

56 years ago, on a day very like today (beautiful and sunny) I was born.
