The Future Through the Eyes of a 12-Year-Old

I had strange thoughts about my future when I was younger. I thought the Italian mob sounded like a pretty cool profession, and I was determined to be the first woman to run the mob. I kinda skipped over the part where I would have to personally kill people or have my underlings kill other people. I liked the glamorous part of having a driver, money, and "respect". I knew that the mob liked women...to a degree...and I thought a natural step would be running the mob. I envisioned coming home from a long day of work and talking over mob problems with my husband, while the nanny took care of the kids. Dinner would be on the table promptly at 6, prepared by our chef who knew the recipes for the best dishes. We would still be good Catholics and go to church every Sunday, and tithe heavily.

I wanted to be the first female President or Vice-President. My childhood best friend and I decided that we'd be the first female duo in office. We'd go back and forth on who would ultimately have power, but we would be a strong team and dominate politics with our feminine wiles. As we saw it, the White House and the presidency needed a woman's perspective. It would be the ultimate coup of the feminist movement. I didn't know much about politics when I was younger, but I did know that the office of the President was something to be esteemed.

Motherhood was also a top priority for me. I wanted a large family - large in today's world. I'm the oldest of 7, and I couldn't (still can't) imagine a household without tons of kids running around. I settled on 5 kids. 7 is too many, 4 is an even number, and 5 was just right. Honestly, after 3 or 4 kids it doesn't matter all that much. So I've heard from other "large" families. Growing up around so many "large" families, 5 was a pretty small number, but I had my career to consider. I would be a working mom, who managed to keep the household afloat, take care of the kids, make home cooked meals for the family, and bask in the love of her husband. I would be a power-woman, with a corner office and plenty of decisions to make. Money wouldn't be a problem for our family - dual incomes of two powerful professionals would ensure that we would live a content life.

How thoughts about my future have changed!
