2013 New Year's Survey

Jan 03, 2014 12:17

Eleven years. Bonkers.

1. What did you do in 2013 that you'd never done before?
Survived a breakup with someone I thought I was going to be with forever. I also started volunteering in a preschool in the Raleigh Rescue Mission, which is a lot more awesome.

2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I sailed through the changing ocean tides like a champ, but I also wanted to be a better friend. On the friend front, I failed horrendously. No resolutions for 2014. I just want to survive it.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
No births. A couple of engagements and a marriage, but no births. Let's see what 2014 brings.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
No deaths.

5. What countries did you visit?
Canada and USA

6. What would you like to have in 2014 that you lacked in 2013?
I don't know if I really lacked it all the way in 2013, but I really want some real, honest to goodness stability in my life. Having things lined up in a way so that no event, no matter how great or small can rock the boat. I know that's kinda impossible, but I'm gonna shoot for it anyways.

7. What date from 2013 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
I'm gonna go with Thanksgiving 2013 because that's when my 2 years with Adam ended.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Navigating the bureaucratic waters of government healthcare and coming out on top. I had a major seizure with a hospital stay and a broken neck, and was covered by my healthcare because I had my shit together. (I just gave myself a high-five).

9. What was your biggest failure?
My relationship with Adam.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Shit, son. I still kinda look like Frankenstein. I got 40 stitches on my forehead and broke my neck in two places from a seizure I had in the beginning of November. I also scraped my face up and down the asphalt in July. I'm sure I did some other stuff, but that's all I've got stored in my memory reserves currently. The 40 stitches left a crazy scar. I still can't feel my scalp, and even covered up with oodles of makeup, I look like I aged a lot.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
I don't think I bought anything significant. I was too broke. I'm on disability, which doesn't leave a lot of money to throw around. I got an awesome sweater on black friday that makes me feel beautiful, so we'll run with that.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
I'm going with Liz. She was there for me 110% when Adam and I broke up. She took time off of work just to make sure my parents didn't rush back from Florida and caveman me. She has made so many positive changes for herself, getting into therapy, (and this was a while ago, but whatever) quitting smoking, moving up the career ladder in the field she studied in college (seriously, who does that?!), breaking up with Charlie, living more healthy... it's really incredible. I'm so proud of her.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
Most of my family who are in my Grandma Green's life on a semi-regular basis. Appalling and depressing are two really good words for it. She needs some surgeries soon, and I'm gonna fly up there this year (if all goes to plan) and spend a month or so with her to help her recuperate because none of them can be counted on. It's sad, really.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Bills.

15. What did you get really excited about?
Adam and I went to Myrtle Beach, and we saw Barenaked Ladies and Ben Folds Five. Those were pretty thrilling.

16. What song will always remind you of 2012?
Blurred Lines by Robin Thicke.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you
i. happier or sadder?: sadder.
ii. thinner or fatter? same.
iii. richer or poorer? poorer.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Something ineffable.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Being obnoxious. And seizing.

20. How did you spend New Year's?
Last year for 2013, actual New Years totally blew. Taylor and Jess came into town and the four of us drank far too much and went way too far. Then we went to a strip club, and went even further than we should of. Adam got Mad Drunk, and Jess got Nuts Drunk and I ended up ringing in the New Year in the parking lot trying to figure out what was going on with Adam. Terrible.

Adam and I decided to do another New Years afterward. We went to an arcade and won a t-shirt, ate wings and watched a football game, went out for a night on the town, which included dancing at a latin cantina and drinking lots of tasty things, meeting cool new people at Natty Greens, and playing pool at Deep South. Then we went home, toasted, talked about what we wanted for 2013, and had lovely sex. Much, MUCH better.

This year I decided to play things low key. I put on some pajamas, got some champagne and some beer, drank it, screwed around on the internet, and watched movies. Then, Khaki, Christopher, Jim and Alison came over after it clicked over to 2014 and we had a nice visit. Then I ate some chinese food and went to bed. A perfectly lovely New Year's Eve, if you ask me.

22. Did you fall in love in 2013?
Absolutely. I totally fell in love with Teddy once he got potty trained.

24. What was your favorite TV program? of 2013?
I don't think anything new stuck. I watched some new stuff that was pretty cool, Freaks and Geeks was pretty good, Breaking Bad was interesting, but the favorites still lord over the rest. Buffy, How I Met Your Mother, etc etc.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
Nah.

26. What was the best book you read?
How about the one that ended in a water birth? Or the one that faked you out and the dad was a child molester the whole time? My mother was not on top of her game and giving out book suggestions this year.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Driftwood. Oh god, Driftwood.

28. What did you want and get?
I didn't get caveman'd after this breakup.

29. What did you want and not get?
A happy ending.

30. What was your favorite film of this year?
Willow

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I turned 27. We celebrated July 4th downtown and got drunk which made my birthday a hangover spectacular and now I can't remember what I did. I'm pretty sure we went out again two nights later. I also seized around that time so that probably has something to do with the memory gap.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Adam and I being the couple I thought we were.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2013?
I spent most of the year in old navy tshirts and shorts. Now it's Ross sweaters and jeans. Crazy!

34. What kept you sane?
Teddy. My friends.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Jason Segel, baby!

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
Healthcare.

37. Who did you miss?
So, so many people.

38. Who was the best new person you met?
All of my strays.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:

'Cuz I can't make you love me
If you don't.
You can't make your heart feel
Something it won't.
Here in the dark
In these final hours,
I will lay down my heart
