New Rule

I'm creating a new rule for myself:

There will be no computer use or internet use of any kind until after I am finished working on whatever homework I'm doing that night. Computer/Internet may be used for the assignment if something needs to be looked up or investigated for further understanding, but that is the only time.

Yes. I think that will do.

Okay. I watched The 39 Steps again today and focused on the music, or large lack thereof I should say. It was good to view it twice in two days. My brain remembered all the story details from the first viewing so I could focus on the music and its purpose and effects during the second viewing. I finished watching the movie about 15 minutes before class, which was very good timing. ^^v

Tonight's class was the last of my academic classes, Seminar Music Analysis. It's hardcore music theory, lol. We'll be analyzing music based on, but not entirely the same as, Schenkerian Analysis. It's an interesting approach, and I like it since it works with the music as a whole and not chord by chord. I made some good points during an hour long discussion on the function of a G major tonicization in A minor (I know that only made sense to about 5 of you, but it's REALLY not that important) and proved that despite what my placement test said, I CAN handle that class with no problems. We have to do a graphical analysis of a Bach C Major Prelude (the one everyone knows) for next week, and read a crapload of readings. Hopefully my textbooks will arrive in the next few days so I can start those readings.

I read one of the two articles for Organology. I have to pick up the missing second page for the second article tomorrow, then I'll read that one over the weekend and write up my article summaries. I have to pick a paper topic for that class and for Musical Analysis. Though, once I have my lesson and discuss with my teacher which concerto/major piece I should put on my Masters Recital I'll have a better idea of a piece to focus on for Musical Analysis. Hmm, perhaps I'll write about the Fugue in the G minor Sonata. Even if it is Bach, I have an odd attraction to that whole piece and want to play it on my recital. The fugue interests me the most of the four movements, and I think analyzing it will make it easier to play (but it still eludes me WHY Bach wrote a three voice fugue for solo violin in the first place >_<. )

I really enjoy the academic level of CSULB. It's a lot higher than Crane's level, for even in the mixed grad/undergrad classes at Crane it still did not feel like my brain needed to work. Here I have to pay attention to the discussions and really think about what I mean before I say anything. It reminds me of the way Dr. Fortunoff ran AP Lit back in high school, which was wonderful.

Performance wise, I'm not sure about the school, and that makes me sad. Maybe it'll be better after I'm in a chamber group and have some private lessons. I hope that I didn't wind up somewhere excellent for intellectuals but mediocre for performers.

But enough of that. I'm tired and have to get up at 6:30 to have enough time to warm up and drive to campus before chamber groups at 10. Fridays will be my day of playing instruments. I like the sound of that. ^^v

Oyasumi nasai, minna-san! (Goodnight, everyone!)
