Buzzer Beat: Yamapi scores. Repeatedly. Sometimes even on the court.

Buzzer Beat

He's a basketball player chasing a dream. She's a violinist who yells him into greatness. Together, kissing and cuddling and sunflowers!

Okay, make a checklist of things you never thought you'd see in a jdrama:

  • Frequent kissing
  • Open-mouthed kissing
  • Easy physical affection like cuddling and touching
  • A natural, mutually supportive relationship between two functional people with no great hang-ups

HOLY SHIT BUZZER BEAT HAS THEM ALL. IT'S LIKE IT'S NOT EVEN A JDRAMA.

Naoki and Riko, drama OTP, cuteness personified.

Naoki is a basketball player trying to make it big. You could say he's the vehicle for an inspirational message about the importance of youth and dreams... or you could say it's an excuse to see Yamapi sweat and angst and bathe. A lot.

Some people donate to charities. Yamapi improves mankind by flashing a little nipple.

This is Riko. All my violin-playing caps make her look super serious, but actually she's more like this:

Riko is hilarious in that she's exactly like an average 20something and that never ever happens in jdramas. Instead of being saintly and pure, Riko gets drunk, yells at stupid people, hams it up for her cellphone camera, and occasionally forgets to wear a bra around the house.

She also plays violin on the same court where Naoki practices basketball... and an OTP is born.

I should point out that they're so cute, even the fucking billboard ships them.

THAT IS SOME SERIOUS OTP POWER.

Naoki gives her a piggyback ride back to her place, then cleans it. That's right, he's a guy who cooks and cleans and loves kisses and cuddles. PERFECT? I THINK SO.

    Well, except for the girlfriend.

She's snarky and hateful, and I may be in the minority because I love Aibu Saki, but I thought her character was AWESOME. I mean, this is a woman so secure in herself that she cheats on Yamapi. YAMAPI. She looks at Yamapi and thinks, I CAN DO BETTER.

Fuck him! Fuck that cooking, cleaning, cuddling cutie! She'd rather have... Yoyogi!

Quit shoving in line, ladies. I know everybody wants a piece.

She likes him for the plot.

Further complicating the love square is Riko's suitor, Kawasaki...

...who happens to be Naoki's coach. And I just realized my caps make it look like Kawasaki is jealous that his boyfriend is paying attention to someone else, and then I realized the drama doesn't exactly discourage this kind of thinking.

    THEY'RE JUST GOOD FRIENDS!

MALE BONDING IS BEAUTIFUL... AND WET... AND LICKABLE...

"Look, I know you're fucking my girlfriend, but before the inevitable confrontation, can I feel you up?"

Okay, one more ship and I'll stop. But I just have to mention Mai/Shuji. She's the weird BFF and he's the sweet goofball who lives in her closet!

THEY ALMOST OUT-CUTE THE MAIN OTP. Even though she dresses like a curtain and he has all the virility of a small poodle... who is also female.

    WHO'S MORE ADORABLE?

    I CAN'T DECIDE!

Even his angst is cute! Look at his hair, it's so sad it's trying to escape his face.

Did I mention all the kissing? And the cuddling? And the cuteness?

    Yes! In a jdrama!

    Even Riko can't believe it!
