Zeni Geba: Someone call Agent Hotchner 'cause that boy is a m-m-m-monster.

Zeni Geba

She's a rich heiress. He's a money-hungry psychopath looking for a meal ticket. Together, nightmares, murder, obsession, and a few bodies in the backyard!

I think this might actually be the most fucked-up drama I've ever seen. Let me put it this way: the hero beats two people to death in the premiere alone, and that's when he was still sympathetic.

He never gets better.

Aww, look at the little woobie. Isn't he adorable?

ADORABLE, RIGHT?

His name is Futaro, and he's a twisted psychopath irreparably scarred by his tragic past, where his abusive father sponged everything off his terminally ill mother until she died and left Futaro hungry and homeless. Are you ready? This is still the cheerful part.

Futaro grows up in a rap song, obsessed, obsessed with money.

Somehow it never occurs to him to strip for cash, which sucks for us.

This is Midori, an upper-class heiress. What would you say if I told you Futaro manipulated his way into her household and made her fall in love with him just so he could bankrupt the family's company and mock everyone in sick wealthy triumph?

Well, it's not true. He actually does it to her crippled little sister!!!

Akane is ill and lonely and perfect prey for the psycho. I mean hero. Um... protagonist?

But! Akane loves him unconditionally! Surely that pierces his barriers. Surely he falls in redemptive love with her pure, sweet spirit and puts all his revenge plans behind him... right?

Er...

Actually, most of their scenes are like this one, where he covers her ears and whispers about how ugly and annoying and useless she is, and how much hates her and how he's going to destroy her family.

Still with me? It gets worse.

Futaro is full of fun suggestions for the household, like putting people in comas. And bodybags.

At the grave... of someone he killed... and buried in their backyard. Yeah.

Don't worry, he feels really guilty afterward.

THIS MOMENT. Oh my god. Futaro tries to beat his obsession by letting go -- literally tossing a bunch of money off a building -- except then the pedestrians start going crazy for it, knocking each other over, grasping for the bills in the air like a fucking religious experience, and Futaro sees all the insanity and reaffirms his worldview in a scene that culminates with him having a complete psychological breakdown right there on the roof, screaming and sobbing and laughing hysterically, flinging money at all the tiny little figures as he lords over them like a god.

JUST AN AVERAGE SCENE IN ZENI GEBA.

At the heart of everything is Futaro/Midori. I should disclaim there's no romance between them whatsoever, but that didn't stop me from wrongshipping them like crazy.

Yeah, I'm going straight to hell.

Midori recognizes Futaro for what he is, and promises to see the end of him. Direct quote. She wants him to fall to ruin and die crying. Direct quote.

The visuals in this drama are GORGEOUS, which is... well, something. If we have to lose our faith in humanity, at least it's done stylishly.

It gets even better, but I'm trying to avoid spoilers (if you think I've given a lot away, just know I haven't even touched on half of it). Come prepared for lots of madness and schadenfreude and you'll be fine.

Scarred for life, but fine.

Futaro says hi.
