Taiyou to Umi no Kyoushitsu: The one where Japan actually celebrates nonconformity!

Taiyou to Umi no Kyoushitsu

School drama with a twist: instead of a righteous teacher inspiring no-good punks to greatness, this class is made of uptight, exam-obsessed model students who gradually learn from their teacher the fun lesson of rebellion. Studying? Academics? Pshhhhh. THERE'S MORE TO LIFE! And Sakurai-sensei will swing on a rope through a third-story window to prove it.

He's happy, pushy, animated, talkative, unconventional, and probably just a tad insane. So he's pretty much the Tenth Doctor.

He holds staring contests in class, thinks it's fun to crawl through air ducts, and doesn't mind making life lessons with chainsaws. Also, the George of the Jungle impression? ACTUALLY HAPPENS.

THIS MAN IS IN CHARGE OF CHILDREN.

The impressionables.

Riku and Hiroki have been friends since childhood, setting off all your first love buttons.

Dawwwww!

They like to pretend they're not hopelessly in love, but we know better. They're childhood sweethearts who have arguments in the rain -- the only way they could get more OTP is if one of them had cancer.

Hachi and Akari are at that weird more-than-friends less-than-lovers stage where they clearly care about each other, but various things keep them apart. Like Akari's crush on someone else. Also, Hachi dating a psycho.

THE FACE OF EVIL.

NOT KIDDING.

Akari is totally the kdrama hero -- emotionally stunted and refusing to believe in the love of his genki girl (who in this case is actually a boy).

Hachi is too cute for his own love triangle.

Unlike their peers, Hana and Yamato are smart and responsible. STUDYING IS IMPORTANT! THEY ARE DEDICATED STUDENTS. That's why they kiss in the library.

You may scream now, because you're looking at the little brother from Hana Yori Dango getting some.

Eiji is a broody student with a secret: he's really Yamamoto Yusuke and he has no idea what he's doing in this drama. No, wait. Actually, he has a secret about his homelife, which makes the assistant teacher take an innocent interest in his well-being...

...except she looks like Kitagawa Keiko, so I went to hell for wrongshipping them and the devil met me and said "dude, it could be worse, you could be shipping the male teacher with his students" and I went "UM. I'M KINDA DOING THAT TOO."

Yes, this is a seventeen-year-old sweating and moaning while his classmates hold him down and his teacher performs makeshift surgery with a fishhook. Japan, you are sick. Please give me more.

IT'S LIKE THEY'RE NOT EVEN TRYING TO HIDE IT.

Sakurai-sensei encourages freedom and rebellion and backtalk. For some reason, the other teachers don't like this.

The evil, evil administation of NO FUN.

Interesting fact about Kohinata Fumiyo and Yoshitaka Yuriko: their previous drama had them in an unspoken May/December romance, and here -- just a few months later, realtime -- he's the principal to her wayward schoolgirl, lecturing her about the dangers of older men. HAHAHAHA.

This is a pretty, pretty drama full of prettiness. *__*

Preeeeeeetty. Even their clothes match the scenery! How cool is that?

I don't want to say too much, but this is more than your average teacher drama. Things actually come together in a big way. There's plot! And friendship and romance and love squares and Sakurai-sensei giving adorable life lessons and probably banging everyone on the side.

SAY HELLO TO DADDY.

They all know they want his sexy body.
