If you've never seen an Asano Taeko drama, just check the tag. This woman revels in misery and despair. Her favorite pastime is holding her characters over boiling water. Innocent Love has the following: prison, arson, abuse, comas, amnesiac orphans, attempted suicide, attempted murder, childhood trauma, hammer-wielding stalkers, and unstable psychopaths with epic blackmailing schemes.
And it's still one of the most cheerful dramas she's done, because at least her characters were happy sometimes.
Kanon lost everything at thirteen: her parents were murdered, her home torched, and her brother arrested for the crime.
But she's convinced of her brother's innocence ("he's a very gentle person!!"), which is hilarious when he calmly visits her after beating the shit out of his cellmates and holding drills to people's eyes. He's a kitten, honest!
Did I mention he's, uh, very invested in her well-being?
AND SHE HAS AMNESIA.

Desperate for work, Kanon becomes housekeeper for a local musician, Junya. He's a cute woobie pianist with a sad past of his own...
... which is in a coma, inexplicably locked in his back room. I guess he didn't want her stealing all the attention at parties.
Helpless to Junya's irresistible attraction of wet-dishrag expressions and emotional unavailability, Kanon goes through his photo albums and sniffs his clothes when he's not there.
Junya's best friend is a wealthy, single, yacht-owning hottie with casual hordes of diamonds. SO OF COURSE HE'S GAY.
This right here is the true torture.
Subaru is determined to see Junya happy at any cost, even if that means trying to asphyxiate his comatose fiancee. What? It's love! Murder just means you care! Ask sisterluster!
Then there's Mizuki, who is also panting for Junya, except she has a special brand of caring -- which involves locking him in his own room and musing out loud how long he can survive without food or water.
Also known as "stalking" in some countries. "If he really gets to know me, all about me, he'll leave me like everyone else always does." You'd think she had a traumatic past or something.
Kanon/Junya is the one redeemable feature of this drama. They're two damaged woobies with abandonment issues drawn together for cuddles between breakdowns. It's insane, and delicious.
Where "innocence" includes stalking, stealing, cheating, and beating people unconscious with hammers....
It's a bird! It's a plane! It's Asano Takeo's credibility!
