Love My Life
This movie is cuuuuuuuuute wrapped in CUTE topped with EVEN MORE CUTE. It's a fluffball romance with two happy, non-tragic lesbians who aren't angsty or gender confused -- they're women happy being women and happy being with women. And NO ONE DIES. Put that in your pipe and smoke it, Japan!
CUUUUUTE HAPPY ADORABLE CUUUUUTE
The whole movie is pretty much an upbeat montage of the OTP kissing, or playing at the beach, or skipping down the street holding hands. It's so satisfying. NO CANCER! No copouts! No refrigerators!
And they are hypnotizingly pretty. Mmmmm.
Eri is an aspiring lawyer, much to the exasperation of her homophobic father, who says it doesn't matter if she fails the bar exam because she's a woman and doesn't need to work. This makes Eri determined to become a goddamn lawyer, even though she couldn't care less about the job. Her success will be her revenge.
Ichiko is her lover, the yin to her yang, the Hachi to her Nana. Ichiko's father is the complete opposite of Eri's -- sweet and loving and supportive. Suspiciously supportive...
BECAUSE HE'S ALSO GAY. AND SO WAS HER LATE MOTHER. Their marriage was just a pretense while they both dated other people. "Dad, I'm gay." "Oh, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, honey." "???!!"
DAD'S BOYFRIEND. YES, THAT IS IKEUCHI HIROYUKI. You may recognize him as Bun-chan from
Katagoshi no Koibito.
Bun-chan:
Dad's hot gay lover:
It's good to see an actor sticking with his niche. I'd even say it's... fabulous.
Ichiko's friend Take is a closeted gay man on the prowl for a boyfriend. Perhaps he should hook up with Bun-chan II? I'm sure you could make arguments for the likelihood of LGBT Japan sticking together, but honestly, I just enjoyed the explosion of gay, gay, gay. At one point Eri and Ichiko run into her mother's "old friend" and her new girlfriend, and all four ladies chill on the beach and discuss lesbianism. It's awesome.
Ichiko also hooks up -- everyone's gay, stay with me -- with an awesomely-haired stranger at work.
HOW COULD YOU CHEAT ON ERI? WHY DO YOU WANT A BURGER WHEN THERE'S STEAK AT HOME?
But no worries, there's no real angst in this movie, just occasional detours in marginally less happy moments.
I hope you watched this, Asano Taeko. I hope you watched this and choked on it.
This is a movie where the plot is hot young lesbians making out in taxis. And bed. And beaches...
And they cuddle!!! Oh god, so sweet and adorable and made of sunshine and rainbows. "Since our eyes met, I knew I had been looking for her."
Oh, did I mention they have sex?
I love plot. Don't you love plot?
