Rene in Melbourneland

I love Melbourne. I had a beautiful, beautiful week just exploring, and in just a few months here I've experienced so much. Can't believe it's already my third month here!

Last Sunday morning (4am) I managed to catch the Eta Aqauarids meteor shower, which was stunning! It wasn't as many as it could've been because it was cloudy that night (morning), but my first view of meteoroids so it was worth staying up for. (Friend asks, shouldn't that read woken up for?) Tomorrow there's supposed to be the ring of fire solar eclipse at sunrise, but it's only visible from Darwin and Perth and Brisbane, not Melbourne.

Autumn is totes my favourite season, although I never got to experience it until last week. ♥ It was breathtaking to see the carpet of cerise-amber-gold blanketing both the trees and the ground! Next year I'll go earlier in the season though, because by the time I went about half the leaves had already kamikaze'd. There was this lovely stretch of trees my friend visited that lost their fiery glory in the space of a week. THAT WAS FAST. Why does the prettiness only last a month? D:

After that I went city-exploring (although I had no idea which street I was on) and ate at this tiny Japanese restaurant called Sushi Hotaru. Apparently sushi trains are pretty uncommon here? They had the best scampi and sashimi but I have no idea how much I ate because my friend snagged the receipt when it came and paid for me. (_ _);;; Then I emerged somewhere and found my way to Swanston St. and my beloved Gong Cha. They have the best bubble tea and are virtually everywhere in Singapore but the one in Melbourne city is the sole outlet here. I HOARDED THREE TO BRING BACK TO MY ROOM but again my friend paid omg. /cries

I really do prefer the city to the suburbs because I am such a city-person at heart, but tolls are like A$11 to drive there, and parking fees are an abomination. Speaking of parking fees I foresee spending a lot on them, because I have hospital attachments and the fees are like $10/hour. I managed to get away with parking on the street at my placement yesterday but the streets have a limit of two hours before you have to move your car. Luckily my supervisor let all the students off early so I could go get my car before I got a ticket.

The weather is beautiful, there's great food (although sadly not near enough to where I am), I've met lovely people. It's really pretty much study-hard-play-hard here, and we were slavishly mugging for the mid-semester exam up until it was over last Wednesday; and then everyone went mad with celebration. Some of the lecturers are pretty funny, which deserves a lot of applause because the lecture content isn't exactly comedy gold.

And this was one of the videos screened in my lecture on envenoming. I have no idea if it's the spiders or the researcher who is actually on crack.
