okay, so here's how I ran tonight...
the high school track is 1/4 mile for one full lap
only running/sprinting is timed, the rest is just warm-up/cool-down

1/2 lap walking, 4 laps running moderate pace, 1/2 lap walking, stop to stretch
stopwatch reading; 9:35

1/2 lap walking, 3 laps running moderate pace, 1/2 lap walking, stop to stretch
stopwatching reading; 16:57

1/2 lap walking, 2 laps running easy-cheesy pace, 1/2 lap walking (stopwatch reading; 22:47, no stopping between walking and next running interval) 1/2 lap fast run at beginning into sprinting (almost flat out) halfway through, 1 1/2 laps walking, stretched at finish.
stopwach final reading; 23:30

so 1 full mile in 9:35
next 3/4 mile in 7:22
next 1/2 mile in 6:50
next 1/8 mile in 0:43

2 3/8 miles running distance, 23:30 timed distance
3 1/2 miles total distance tonight

*looks back at distance/time*
hey wow, that's pretty cool! =D I have impressed myself. Especially since I didn't overextend myself just to outdistance the jr. track kids (they looked like they were in 3rd-6th grade) that blew by me in their 1 and 2 laps at a time with a lot of nonrunning time between their runs. They were all cocky that they were passing the "old people" and "highschool jocks" (I think they included me in the "highschool jock" category, lol, little do they know...), it was cute. I'd have laughed but I didn't want to lose my breath.

I'm still building up my breath. I feel like as long as I can breathe, I can do anything. But once I start losing it, having to breathe faster and harder, closer to gasping than breathing really, then I need a break. Fortunately I never got to the gasping stage, I kept my breath during all 4 running intervals, and nary a cramp or stitch was felt.

And running on a flat surface like the track is actually harder than running on the hills of my neighborhood! I couldn't believe it, the effort was different, much more consistent, there were no resting periods and no periods of more effort unless I decided to go faster. It was a more sustained effort on my part and I felt it in different parts of my leg muscles. I think as often as I can I'm going to run at the track now so I have consistent results.

And woohoo! I'm going to dress up as Lara Croft from the Tomb Raider video games/movies for halloween this year. All this running and the weight lifting I'm starting is going to make me into one hard sleek bad-ass Lara. It's gonna be great. I feel grrrrrrrrrrrreat.
