We're all in the self-help business.

We're all in the self-help business.

We may not be chowing down on personal growth books, sageing our houses or chanting mantras, but as a species of living creatures, we are all born with altruistic qualities. As much as we rage against politicians, if they were in need and right in front of our noses, chances are we would do what we could to help them, or we would feel bad for not being able to help them.

We all want to help each other. We are driven to community, and we want to see others succeed and flourish, no matter if there is hierarchy pecking. When it comes down to it, we all want what's best for each other, even if we sometimes have different ideas about how to do that or how that can be accomplished.

Because, when we help others, we're helping ourselves. And we may be helping a family or an individual realize a dream, or just get a new pair of shoes. We are built to help each other, to care about each other, to be a community.

We all have different specialties, but when it comes down to it, we want to help the other succeed. I think this is the most important thing for me to remember as I'm launching myself back out in the world. There is no "I" -- there is this vast mutual breathing organism that functions to care for its own, reciprocally being present with all its children.
