Chapter Three
The Doctors
Shige gave Koyama a look but then laughed. “Are you sure you’re a newspaper journalist? You should’ve been a game show host or a reporter the way you keep narrating everything.” Koyama let out a small laugh.
A doctor came out and Shige tensed but he went right past the couple and went towards an older woman and seemingly her daughter. Koyama and Shige were compelled to watch the doctor as he relayed some news that they didn’t want to hear. The older woman started to cry extremely loud as the daughter started to quietly sob. Koyama and Shige looked away quickly. They looked at each other and hoped to themselves that this stranger’s fate wasn’t the same as their own loved one.
Soon things quieted down as a nurse in pink scrubs appeared.
“Mister Shigeaki Kato?” She seemed to have trouble with pronunciation but Shige was used to that. The nurse’s eyes never left the clipboard she seemed to bring out of nowhere.
“Yes?” He stayed seated in case the news was just as bad.
“Follow me,” she said simply as Shige slowly stood up. The lawyer looked at Koyama who seemed just as worried about the man’s fate as he did but the lawyer turned to face the nurse as she started to lead the nervous lawyer down the hall.
Shige was almost positive he heard someone’s curses towards the hospital.
oooo
As he walked in the halls, he noticed how cold, dreary, maybe even lonesome the rooms seemed to be as he peeked into every one with an opened door. He saw a young teenaged girl, covered with a hospital gown, who seemed to scream for help through her eyes. In another room, a child screamed for his mother as the doctor and nurses held him down for something. Shige averted his eyes, as he couldn’t take it anymore. Though he did see a man walk down the halls, upbeat. Shige wondered what he was so happy about.
Probably because he doesn’t have to take care of his sick father anymore, Shige thought. He shook his head. He couldn’t help but be so cynical towards a caring place like the hospital. That’s where people would get better. That’s where babies are born, where life begins. Hospitals were also room for greed and death to grow.
Shige would never ask his clients whether they did the deed or not; however, whenever a doctor usually came in, they would throw around money and just expect Shige to defend them blindly. He, much to their disappointment, was not a fool. The doctors would be trying to beat a malpractice suit and Shige just couldn’t be bothered with the corporate greed anymore.
Finally he arrived at the door, it seemed. The nurse opened the door and slammed it shut. Shige winced at the noise. At this point in the evening, his ears started to ring from all the loud noises just from that night. He turned and saw a familiar face.
The doctor didn’t blink though Shige did. This strange man had a way of bringing his friends lately.
“Why am I not surprised it’s you?” He bluntly said. Shige was relieved despite the doctor’s comments.
“Doctor Nishikido,” Shige started, “I don’t want to hear it. Just tell me how he is.” He glanced at the man on the bed who seemed to be sleeping. The lawyer had a better glance at the man whom he was taking care of.
His hair was long, tangled, dirty, and messy. His face seemed kind though he seemed to be sleeping peacefully with bandages over an eye.
The doctor, Doctor Ryo Nishikido, flipped through his own clipboard and wrote something down. His long dark bangs covered his clearly tired eyes and his lips were pouted. Shige wondered if his ‘old pal’ from high school was ever going to change.
Finally, he spoke. “This man, Tomohisa Yamashita, is an idiot.” Shige let out a relieved sigh. He was going to be okay.
