Chapter Two
The Picture
The paramedic seemed to accept Shige’s answer and continued to tend to the rapidly stabilizing man. Shige noticed at the corner of his eyes a piece of crumpled up paper. He didn’t let go of the other man’s hand as he bent down awkwardly to pick it up. Shige felt his hand being squeezed tightly and he glanced at the man’s face, or what was left uncovered or unattended by the rushing paramedics.
The man had an eye opened, it seemed, and he looked straight at Shige. The lawyer wasn’t sure what to make of it so he gave him an awkward smile as he readjusted himself by his side. There wasn’t much Shige was needed for other than emotional support but he wasn’t really used to that role. He was more used to the logical, the more offensive, or rather defensive, support for a person more than anything.
“Give me,” the man muttered. The paramedic got closer to the man as he seemed to regain consciousness to start asking him about his medical information. “Mai.” He gave Shige’s hand a tighter squeeze, where it hurt. “Give it to me.”
Shige was confused on what the man was talking about until finally the ambulance reached its destination. The paramedics broke the two’s hands as they tried to get the man on the stretcher out of the ambulance and into the emergency room safely. Shige hurriedly followed suite as he pocketed the paper, in which he figured whatever it was, it must’ve been important to the man.
oooo
They had started the operation hours ago and Shige didn’t know why he was worried. Shige didn’t know why he and his friends were wasting a perfectly good Saturday night, waiting for news about this mysterious man. For all he knew, he could’ve been a murdering drunk. He could’ve been a child rapist. Why was he compelled to help him? He didn’t think so selfishly when it came to being someone’s defense attorney - but then that was how he earned his living, but he wasn’t cruel in everyday situations.
As soon as the doctors received word on the man’s condition, they didn’t let Shige in, the conversation or the operating room. The only thing Shige picked up was the man’s name finally: Yamashita Tomohisa. He phoned Koyama to let him and his friends know where he is and what had happened. Only Koyama showed up. The rest of his friends had gone to their homes and only asked for updates in the morning.
“It’s because you’re kind,” Koyama suddenly said. Shige was surprised to find his closest friend next to him suddenly that he slightly jumped.
“What?” Shige said finally, not expecting his voice to be so hoarse.
“That’s why you helped him.” Shige gave him a small smile and turned away.
”I suppose that’s true.” He finally said. He gave out a wry laugh. “Can you imagine? A lawyer who’s kind? I wonder what ulterior motive I have.” Shige continued on. Things were still quiet between the two when Shige suddenly recalled the paper in his pocket. He reached for it and grabbed it. He smoothed it out and realized that the paper was instead a picture.
There was a small girl and someone who looked like her mother. The small girl had pigtails on both sides of her head and her mother’s hair was short but they were smiling brightly and honestly. Beautiful golden flowers, marigold if Shige was correct, surrounded them while they wore white. Behind them, there was a man.
He looked nothing like Tomohisa. Shige almost assumed the woman was his wife. He almost assumed these people were his family. He felt disappointed, although he wasn’t sure why, that the man looked nothing like the man in the operating room.
“Who’s that?” Koyama finally said. “Your new client?”
Shige shook his head. His eyes never left the picture. “No, I don’t know. That guy had it with him. He said he wanted it when we were in the ambulance.” Koyama seemed confused.
“How strange,” he said wistfully. “Shigeaki Kato, angelic lawyer, and Keiichiro Koyama, super newspaper man, caught up in a mystery! I hope no one dies in this mystery.”
