Chapter One
The Man

Shigeaki Kato, or known as Shige to his friends and family, stepped out of the small bar with his friends. They laughed about some nonsensical joke as they supported each other. It had been a tough week for all of them, all of them with their different jobs. Shigeaki was known as a very skilled lawyer and would often help people whenever he could. A lot of people would joke he’s the resurrection of an angelic lawyer that had graced the city at one time but he didn’t pay them much mind. He had just won a huge case against a corrupt music manager, trying to swindle the poor pregnant singer from her royalties, and as well as a paternity suit.

“Who would’ve thought that he lied about being the baby’s father? I mean, she’s very good-looking but that’s sort of desperate!” exclaimed his friend, Keiichiro Koyama. Shigeaki was about to say something when he heard a car horn.

As did his friends as well, he turned to see a car smash into a black figure and suddenly a woman screamed loudly. The drunken men’s moods changed to curiosity and worrisome but Koyama got out his cell phone to dial the emergency hotline. Even though as a lawyer he had seen many weird and strange things, Shige couldn’t believe the sight before him.

He wasn’t 100% sure what it was that drove him to the middle of the street, where there was a crowd gathering around the black figure, but he felt something pulling him towards the crowd.

When Shige reached the crowd, he saw a man. A man dressed in frumpy clothes and a shattered bottle by his hand. Blood started to soup up underneath him and Shige couldn’t tell where exactly his wounds were. He couldn’t see his face but Shige was more concerned about the man’s breathing. He reeked of something he couldn’t put his finger on but that wasn’t the issue. Something in his head clicked because he saw himself pushing people away to give him some “air”.

Shige wondered. How in the world do I know this? That’s-

Though before he could finish his own thoughts, an ambulance came and started to help the man into a stretcher. Shige still couldn’t see the man’s face especially since more people started to crowd in but a paramedic grabbed Shige’s arm and brought him close to the ambulance.

“Sir, do you know this man?” he asked hastily. Shige lied as he nodded his head and he climbed into the ambulance with the paramedics and the man. As soon as everyone was secured in, the paramedics closed the doors and the driver immediately started to rush to the hospital, the siren blaring. The sound had always hurt Shige but he couldn’t have just left this man by himself to die.

Not again.

Shige, now with a determined spirit, grabbed the man’s hand as the paramedics checked his heart rate, oxygen intake, and other vitals.

So many questions entered Shige’s mind but he couldn’t ask them for the obvious reason.

Is he dead? What about his heart? Who is this man? Why did he just step out in the middle of traffic like that? Did he have a death wish? Did he have a home? Who is he? Why did I even bother to go check on him? Did I know him once? Was he a past client? Was he the plaintiff at one point? Why me? Why now?

As these questions continued to plague his mind, he felt the other man’s hand squeeze, even if it’s just slightly.

He glanced, confused, to the closest paramedic who only seemed busy trying to open a package. Shige turned back to the man and squeezed his hand tighter.

“He seems to be stabilizing.” One of them finally said. Shige was relived only slightly until the other paramedic started to ask him questions.

“What’s your relation to him?” she asked, she seemed too curious for Shige’s taste but that could’ve been the alcohol from earlier.

“He’s my friend,” he continued to lie. “He-he doesn’t have any family. I look after him.”
