Making me feel glad that I'm not you."
-Avenue Q
Kris downs his fifth shot and slumps in his stool at the bar. He felt like crap and the deafening dubstep did not help.
He literally just got dumped by his boyfriend, at this very club, and now he's drinking his pain away as his now ex-boyfriend is hooking up with random strangers.
"Another shot, please," he groans to the bartender.
The young-looking bartender walks over to him. His nametag reads "Luhan". Kris blurts out, "Aren't you too young to be here."
Luhan brushes him of by saying, "No, I am twenty-two, thank you."
"You are not twenty-two," Kris says in disbeleif. "You look fucking twelve."
"No more shots for you, mister," the bartender spits ("I look at least eighteen," he mutters under his breath) "Now what's up with you? Care to tell me what happened?" he asks Kris.
Kris debates whether or not to tell the bartender, but then figures that bartenders aren't supposed to judge and so spills everything. From coming to this club with his boyfriend to have fun to finding out that his boyfriend has been cheating on him for the past month and wants to break up and is currently grinding against other sweaty bodies on the dance floor, everything. After he finishes his story, he looks up to Luhan for moral support and is met with something different.
"Sucks to suck," Luhan says as he wipes a shot glass clean.
Kris blinks in confusion. "What?"
"I said 'sucks to suck,'" Luhan repeats.
"What does that even mean?" Kris asks.
"It means what it means," Luhan says and laughs. "Either way, I'd sure hate to be you."
"Well that's not very nice," Kris says. "I'm here feeling like crap while you laugh at me. Aren't bartenders supposed to be nicer and more, I don't know, supportive?"
"I never said it was nice, but everybody does it." Luhan puts down the glass and bends over to where his face is right in front of Kris's. Kris examines his face. It's a youthful face with bright brown eyes, a button nose, and small pink lips, framed by sandy blond hair that was swept to the side. Kris admits that Luhan is quite beautiful, moreso than his ex. He continues to admire Luhan's features when Luhan pokes his nose.
Kris's eyesbrows knit together in annoyance as Luhan continues to poke his nose and pinch it, as well as his cheeks when Kris finally snaps, "Could you stop that?"
Luhan giggles and smiles. "Nope."
Luhan starts playing with the bleached ends of Kris's blond hair ("Man your hair is fried," he says) and Kris looks at the bartender, surprised that he hasn't been scolded by the manager, or something of the sort.
Then out of the blue, Luhan says, "Bad things happen to people all the time. You're not the only one."
Kris raises his eyebrows at Luhan's words. That's probably the nicest thing he's said since he first talked to him. Come to think of it, Luhan doesn't seem like a bad person in general. He is a sarcastic asshole, but Kris can be one too.
Kris continues to let Luhan poke and pinch his face as they make small talk about miscellaneous things. His attention starts to draw toward Luhan's lips. He starts to wonder how they'd feel pressed to his, or perhaps to other places, when...
"I'm sure you'll find another person to fill the gap your ex left," he hears Luhan say and is snapped out of his daze.
He makes eye contact with Luhan and says, "I think I might have found someone already," as he leans in to close the distance between their faces.
Luhan smirks. "Well then that sucks, because I'm straight."
What?
"I often comfort people about their harsh break ups, but for some reason people, especially guys, tend to like me. It's actually kind of funny," he explains.
Yeah. Funny to him.
"But no hard feelings. I mean, the world needs people like you to give people like me something to laugh about," he laughs. He returns to cleaning shot glasses.
"What is wrong with you?" Kris finally asks.
"Sorry, man, human nature. Nothing I can do," Luhan says as he puts down the clean shot glass and suddenly does jazz hands. "Schadenfreude! Making me feel glad that I'm not you!" he sings as he points to Kris at the "you" and then walks away.
What the fuck?
