Title: Totally Joy (alternatively titled, "Sometimes You Gotta Be Bold")
Pairing: Joy/Irene, side!Kris/Wendy
Rating: PG-13 (only because of cursing)
Word count: 4133
Summary: Fighting evil by moonlight, creeping on hoobae by daylight, still freaked out by a real fight despite doing this for five years, she is the one named Bae Joohyun. (totallyspies!au)
A/N: Un-beta'ed. This doesn't make sense, but it also kinda does. I recently watched a couple of episodes of Totally Spies and realized how ridiculous the show actually is. In my defense, it was super cool when I was eight. Also Kris is in this because he's my ultimate bias.
Mobile, Alabama - 9:46 pm
"Good job, girls. Another villain out of the way," Kris told Joohyun, Seulgi, and Wendy after a mission well done. To the man in handcuffs to told him, "And to you, Dr. Doofenschmirtz, you'll be spending a lot of time in the WYF holding cell." He guided, moreso pushed, the crotchety scientist into the helicopter with the WYF Coorporation logo.
"Yeah, yeah, can we go now?" Wendy brushed off. "I really need some sleep." Joohyun rolled her eyes, but agreed with her friend slash teammate. She was pooped.
"Yes," Kris called out from the helicopter, "Also Irene, Seulgi, Wendy, you'll be getting a new team member sometime soon."

St. Mary's Senior High School - 9:20 am
Sooyoung dropped her bag on the floor before bending over to drink from the water fountain. Once she quenched her thirst, she wiped her lips with the back of her mouth, picked up her bag, and walked away.
Three lockers down stood Joohyun staring at the girl now opening her locker.
"Unless you plan on talking to her, I suggest you stop creeping on Sooyoung," Seulgi's voice rang, making Joohyun jump in surprise. She scowled at her friend.
"I am not creeping on her," Joohyun refuted. Wendy shot her a disbelieving look.
"Name: Bae Joohyun. Alias: Irene. Specialty: fighting and staring at freshman Park Sooyoung," Wendy announced. "You were definitely creeping on her."
"Was not," Joohyun argued back.
"Why don't you talk to her?" Seulgi suggested as if it was the most obvious thing to do. "Sooyoung's a nice girl."
"Are you kidding?" Joohyun exclaimed. "I can't do that! I'd have nothing to talk about with her."
"Sure you can," Wendy said. "Hey, Sooyoung. Come over!" she hollered across the hall. Joohyun's eyes widened in mortification. "You'll thank me later."
Sooyoung approached Wendy and stood right next to Joohyun.
"Sooyoung-ah. I want you to meet my friend, Bae Joohyun. She's a senior," Wendy gestured. Sooyoung smiled brightly at her and Joohyun half-smiled awkwardly back.
Joohyun looked nervously in different directions and looked at her wrist. "Oh look at the time," she piped despite not actually wearing a watch, "I gotta head to class, bye." She hurried away from Sooyoung and the others and arrived to her biology class way too early.
"What the heck, Joohyun? Sooyoung did not deserve that," Seulgi scolded her. Joohyun closed her locker and sighed. They had been nagging her about this morning's inappropriate and rather bitchy behavior with Sooyoung, and frankly she agreed with them.
"I know," Wendy exasperated. She flipped her hair behind her shoulder. "And I went through all that trouble to introduce you two. Talk about ungrateful."
"Speaking of which, how do you know her?" Seulgi asked her. Wendy wore a sly smile.
"I have my ways."
"Uh, guys, can we stop talking about it? Thanks," Joohyun cut in. "We have an important meeting with Kris today. New recruit, remember?" Seulgi and Wendy both rolled their eyes.
As if Kris were listening in on their conversation (which Joohyun had been skeptical of for a while), the floor opened beneath them. A collective scream as well as a "can't Kris call us over in a more normal way?" was expressed as the three girls slid down the shoot they knew would open up to Kris's office at WYF Corporation Headquarters.
They landed messily on top of a mattress that cushioned their fall.
"Seven years and I'll still never get used to that," Seulgi muttered spitefully as she attempted to drag herself from underneath Wendy. "Move, you're heavy," she commanded, pushing Wendy away from her.
Stuck under the weight of both Seulgi and Wendy, Joohyun peeked past Kris's obnoxiously large couch and noticed someone sitting in the seat in front of his desk. She couldn't see the face of the new person clearly, but Joohyun found the unknown person vaguely familiar.
"Glad you could drop by, ladies," Kris's voice boomed as he turned around in his office chair.
"Cut the crap, Kris," Wendy sassed.
"Show respect to your elders," Kris scolded her teasingly. "Anyway, I want to introduce the new recruit I mentioned last time. I think you all know her." He looked to the person in the chair. "Introduce yourself."
The person in the chair stood up and turned around. Joohyun couldn't believe her eyes.
"Hi, I'm Soo-" she started before noticing Joohyun. "Joohyun-unnie?!"
"Sooyoung?" Joohyun meekly voiced out as Wendy and Seulgi smirked suggestively.
Just as Joohyun finally processed what had just happened and attempted to say something smart, Kris interrupted her thoughts with his annoying voice. "Good to see you getting along. Sooyoung has already gone through training, so no need to worry about that." He gestured at Seulgi, Joohyun, and Wendy still sitting on the couch. "I need to address that here you are not Sooyoung, and your friends are not who you think they are. In front of you are Seulgi, Wendy, and Irene, and you will call them such from now on."
"Girls, from now on she is not Sooyoung, she is Joy. Watch out for her." Sooyoung, or now Joy, walked over and conveniently sat next to Joohyun. Joohyun nervously side-eyed her and then directed her attention to Kris.
"For the mission, you will be investigated the break-in of Charlie's Chocolate Factory in London," Kris started, "It appears that someone had stolen their secret chocolate recipe and I want you four to investigate." He pushed a button on his desk and a shelf of different gadgets appeared in front of them.
"They all look like makeup items," Sooyoung inquired.
"That's because they're supposed to," Joohyun said. "You went through training, right?"
"No need to be so harsh, Irene," Kris scolded her.
"Yeah, Irene," Seulgi joked. Joohyun glared at her.
"Continuing on," Kris said again and circled his hand around what looked to be compact mirrors, "These are your scanners that will send what you find back to our labs." He gestured over to the lipstick tubes. "These are lasers. They're hot enough to melt diamond, so be careful." He picked one up and shot the laser at a metal plate, thus proving his previous statement. He placed it down and showcased four pairs of boots. "These boots can also act as grappling hooks by the press of a button right... here." A hook shot out in Wendy's direction, causing her to scream and duck.
"What is wrong with you?!" she shouted at her boss.
"Get dressed and good luck on your mission, girls," Kris ended his schpeel promptly before sending them off to suit up.
"Don't we at least get jet packs?" Seulgi half sassed, half legitimately wondered as they walked to their suits.
"Also your jet packs are right next to your uniforms," he shouted. The girls saw four uniforms -pink, blue, yellow, and green-- displayed out and ready for them to change into. Joohyun picked up the pink jumpsuit and started stripping down.
"What an asshole," Wendy muttered, still bitter from her boss nearly killing her.
"Come again?" Kris called from the other room.
"I called you an asshole, asshole!" Wendy shouted loud enough so Kris could hear her. Wendy huffed and picked up the blue jumpsuit to change into.
"You sure you don't have a thing for Kris?" Seulgi teased as she took off her shirt and grabbed the yellow jumpsuit. Wendy shot her an incredulous look.
"Ew, no. He's like forty," she snapped.
"I'm twenty-seven," Kris corrected her from the other room.
"Stop eavesdropping on teenage girls, you pervert!" Wendy hollered. She peeked over and saw Joohyun fully dressed in her uniform and hurried over to change into hers.
Sooyoung, changing into the remaining green uniform, looked lost and stared at the other three girls wide-eyed. Seulgi, finally dressed in her yellow jumpsuit, noticed her lost expression and chuckled.
"They're always like that," Seulgi reassured her. Sooyoung nodded, but her expression still remained the same.
"Seulgi-unnie," Sooyoung started, "Why do you and Wendy-unnie keep your real names, but Joo-, I mean Irene-unnie doesn't?"
"Well I've been in this business for seven years," Seulgi told her. "They didn't decide to do the alias changing thing until Irene joined." Wendy approached Seulgi in her blue jumpsuit, offering her a hair tie. "Wendy kept her name because she's a bitch and Kris didn't want to deal with it," Seulgi continued to explain. Wendy punched her in the arm. Seulgi smacked her back. "Plus you heard that interaction. You can say she and Kris have something going on, but I can't be sure because she won't tell us."
"Because there's nothing between us," Wendy explained. "You're only saying that because we're both Canadian."
"Are you guys done discussing Wendy's thing for our boss?" Joohyun cut in, "Because we gotta head out now."
"Since when did you get sarcastic?" Wendy joked.
"I have my moments," Joohyun simply said.
"Enough about me though," Wendy said. "You think you gonna finally grow a pair and talk to Soo- Joy?"
"Can you stop?"
"No. Consider this payback." Wendy pushed, more so shoved, Joohyun in Sooyoung's direction. Joohyun managed to compose herself (after swearing to murder Wendy) before finally deciding to calmly approach her junior.
"So, uh, first mission, right?" she awkwardly said, making Sooyoung jump in shock from the unexpected question.
"Yeah," Sooyoung replied awkwardly, yet cheerily. She flashed Joohyun a flawless smile that would have made her literally melt had she not been at work.
Getting over the suddenness of Sooyoung's smile, Joohyun stiffly walked over and patted her crush (yes, she admitted to having a crush on Sooyoung) on the back. "Don't mess up," she said and promptly walked away.
Sooyoung's facial expression dropped slightly before Wendy approached her with a pat on the back.
"Don't worry about her," Wendy reassured her. "She's not good around strangers."
"But we've already met," Sooyoung reasoned.
"Scratch that, she's not good with people."
"Let's go!" Joohyun shouted at the other girls.

Charlie's Chocolate Factory in London - 3:15 pm
Ready to kick ass (well, more so sneak in, inspect, and get the hell out in time for happy hour at their favorite ice cream joint), Seulgi, Wendy, Joohyun, and Sooyoung stepped out of the old, white van.
"Kris needs to give us better transportation," Wendy complained.
"Why don't you tell your boyfriend that next time?" Seulgi teased suggestively. Wendy made a face.
"You know what, I'm not gonna bother anymore," Wendy brushed off. Joohyun stretched her arms and bent down to touch her toes.
Seulgi surveyed her surroundings before nudging Wendy. "Hey. Let's go up."
"You sure that's a good idea?" Wendy questioned.
"You never know until you try," Joohyun inputted. She reached over to turn on her jet pack and shot off into the air, Wendy, Seulgi, and Joy following behind.
Joohyun landed gracefully on the rooftop of the factory with Seulgi and Wendy landing on her left and right. Looking around for Sooyoung, she noticed the younger girl struggling mid-air with her jet pack. She immediately flew up to help her.
"Hey, S- Joy," Joohyun called to her. Sooyoung's face turned beet red as she curled up in what Joohyun interpreted as embarrassment. "Calm down and get yourself upright."
Sooyoung grabbed onto Joohyun's hand and she positioned herself upright. Joohyun squeezed the younger girl's hand and led her down to the rooftop where Seulgi and Wendy were waiting.
Just as Joohyun and Sooyoung landed, an angry, robotic voice screamed, "Intruder alert! Intruder alert!" The girls looked behind them and saw an army of security bots with red eyes, all of them screaming, "Intruder alert!"
Wendy glared at Seulgi. "'Let's go up,' you said." She shrieked as Seulgi pulled her out of the way of a laser beam. Seulgi roundhouse kicked the robot and its head went flying off.
Joohyun pulled out her lipstick laser and melted the robot about to attack Seulgi from behind.
Seulgi ducked and rolled as a robot swung its robot limbs at her. To Wendy she said, "You and Joy go in. Irene and I will handle these guys." Wendy nodded and ran to the door with Sooyoung following close behind.
"Will they be okay?" Sooyoung asked out of concern, looking back at the two girls fighting a hoard of robots.
"Yeah," Wendy answered. She reached the door and kicked it down. "Seulgi and Irene have been doing this for years," she told Sooyoung as they both ran down the steps to the factory. "Plus Irene's our best fighter."
Joohyun had always hated fighting.
She realized this after her first mission years ago, yet here she was years later as the group's best fighter shooting scary robots with a tube of lipstick. All was fine and dandy until one of the bots smacked it out of her hand to the direction of the door Wendy kicked down, way out of her reach. She cursed to herself.
"Irene, what are you doing?!" Seulgi exclaimed as she snapped the head off of another robot. "You can do better than this. Think. You're doing this for Joy."
Something clicked in Joohyun's mind when Seulgi said that. 'I'm doing this for Sooyoung,' she thought. Getting up from the ground, she let out a battle scream and side-kicked a robot's head off. With a new found determination, she easily annihilated the remaining robots with Seulgi's help.
"I knew bringing up Joy would get you in your fighting mode," Seulgi poked fun at her.
"Let's go," Joohyun ignored her. They ran toward the door to the inside of the factory, Joohyun picking up her dropped lipstick laser.
They caught up with Wendy and Sooyoung inspecting the area around a vat of chocolate. Joohyun saw Wendy suddenly bend down and pick something up.
"What have you guys found so far?" Joohyun questioned the two. Wendy tucked her hair behind her ear and held up what looked to be a pearl earring. Joohyun inspected it carefully before pulling out her compact scanner. "Let's send that to Kris for analysis and call it a day."

St. Mary's Senior High School -10:32 am
"So, Joohyun," Wendy's voice rang suddenly from behind Joohyun's locker door. Joohyun slammed her locker door shut and was faced with Wendy and Seulgi's annoyingly smug smiles. "I heard from Seulgi that you took out those robots preeeeeetty quickly." Joohyun immediately knew where this conversation would lead to.
"That should be no surprise to you," she gritted between her teeth. She loved her friends, but sometimes she didn't. This would be one of those times.
"Yeah, but you had some determination," Wendy continued on, the smug smile on her face never leaving. 'Here it comes.' Joohyun thought. "Perhaps a cute freshman on your mind?" She wiggled her eyebrows. Joohyun rolled her eyes.
"I'm done with you," Joohyun deadpanned.
"Hey, Sooyoung," Seulgi greeted suddenly.
"Where?" Joohyun's eyes widened and she quickly turned around to look for her junior.
"You are whipped," Wendy said. "Hey, Sooyoung."
"I'm not falling for that again," Joohyun grumbled.
"Hi, Wendy, Seulgi, Joohyun-unnie," Sooyoung chimed from behind Joohyun making said girl jump in her spot. "How are you?"
"We're fine," Seulgi said smoothly as if she hadn't been mocking Joohyun seconds earlier. 'How does she do that?' Joohyun thought to herself. "Sooyoung, Joohyun said she wants you to join us for ice cream after school. Right, unnie?"
Finally processing what Seulgi had just said to Sooyoung, Joohyun stuttered out, "uh, yeah," in agreement.
"Sounds fun," Sooyoung replied. She looked down at her watch and panicked. "Oh, I gotta go. I'll see you guys after school?"
"See you, Sooyoung," Wendy called after her. Joohyun awkwardly raised her hand to wave. Once Sooyoung turned the corner and was out of sight, she glared at her two friends.
"What was that?" she demanded.
"We were doing you a favor," Wendy explained calmly. "No need to thank us."
"Plus," Seulgi added, "Sometimes you gotta be bold." Joohyun walked off to her class, totally done with the people she called her friends.
Baskin Robins Ice Cream Parlor -3:15 pm
Joohyun slowly licked away at her strawberry ice cream cone as she watched her friends and Sooyoung (Sooyoung's technically a friend, but she's not a Wendy or Seulgi level of friend; she's more of a 'I like you and want to be your friend but I'm too dumb and shy to properly talk to you and I also want to make you smile' sort of friend) chat with each other naturally. It was slightly discouraging to see her friends whom she knew forever act to friendly with the one person she wants to be friendly with herself.
Sooyoung laughed at something Seulgi said, almost spitting out the mint ice cream she was eating. Joohyun smiled and handed her a napkin. Sooyoung looked at her as if she were asking for permission and Joohyun nodded in response. Sooyoung took the napkin and wiped her mouth. Joohyun leaned back in her chair and continued eating her ice cream.
She decided that she liked the sound of Sooyoung's laughter.
Suddenly, Joohyun's phone went off.
"Wendy, tell your boyfriend to not bother us during ice cream time," Seulgi told an annoyed Wendy.
"For Pete's sake, he is not my boyfriend," Wendy argued back.
Joohyun ignored the two and unlocked her phone. "What's up, Kris?" The other three girls crowded around Joohyun's phone to hear what their boss had to say.
"I just analyzed the evidence you sent me and it turns out that the owner of this earring is Betty Crocker," Kris immediately told her.
"Why would Betty Crocker sneak into Charlie's Chocolate Factory?" Seulgi asked. "What could she possibly want?"
"I'm not sure," Kris replied. "I'm making preparations for you to head over to Minnesota to find out for me." The ground under them disappeared and the four of them fell through the oh-so-familiar shoot. "You need to head over to WYF to suit up," he said through the phone as the four girls fell and internally mourned over their lost ice cream.
WYF Headquarters -4:03 pm
Joohyun had just finished putting on her boots when she noticed Sooyoung struggling to zip up her spy suit. She silently walked up to her junior and grabbed the zipper on Sooyoung's spy suit. Sooyoung jumped, not expecting someone to come up from behind her, but then relaxed once she realized it was only Joohyun. Joohyun zipped up the spy suit for her and Sooyoung smiled in return.
Joohyun felt like she could die from happiness because of that smile.
Betty Crocker Headquarters in Minneapolis, Minnesota -4:50 pm
"Shit!"
As soon as Wendy, Seulgi, and Joohyun (Sooyoung was still having trouble with the jet packs) landed on the rooftop of the Betty Crocker Headquarters, they were surrounded by men dressed in black and captured in a net. A woman with short, brown hair, dressed in a red business suit, appeared and commanded the men to take them to her lab.
"Dammit, that's Betty Crocker," Wendy murmured to her friends. She sneakily pulled out her spy communicator and pressed something. "I just sent Joy a distress signal. Hopefully she can help us out. For now we gotta figure out how to get out of here."
The men in black take the three girls down a dark hallway before entering a large factory room with a vat of what looked to be cake batter. They tie the net above the cake batter and the lady in red showed up again.
"I see someone picked up on my carelessness in London," she said.
Joohyun furrowed her eyebrows. "Betty Crocker," she growled.
Betty Crocker let out a snobbish laugh. "Correct, girly. I am Betty Crocker."
"What could you possibly want with Charlie's chocolate recipe?" she questioned.
"Do you not see what you're hanging over?" Betty Crocker scoffed. "I make cake and brownie mixes for a living." She started pacing around the vat. "Baking is my life and I must be number one. And of course being number one means..." a sinister glint flashed in her eye, "eliminating all competition."
"Charlie only makes chocolate. What could you possibly want with that recipe?" Wendy asked.
"Are you dumb?" Betty Crocker sassed her. "My most popular product right now is my chocolate brownie mix with extra chocolate chip. Charlie has the best chocolate in the world. With his chocolate and my brownie mix, I can modify my current product and create the ultimate box brownie mix, thus monopolizing all the boxed cake mix in the world!" An evil cackle erupted from her mouth.
"That is literally the dumbest reasoning I have ever heard," Seulgi deadpanned.
"We do not get paid enough for this," Wendy sighed.
"You won't be able to do that once the officials get a hold of you!" Joohyun shouted.
Betty Crocker smirked. "Well you won't be alive whether they get me or not." She pulled a lever by the vat. The net with the three girls started lowering slowly. "Enjoy your last dessert, girlies." She walked away from the vat, out of the room, leaving Seulgi, Wendy, and Joohyun to freak out.
"Shit! What do we do?" Seulgi started panicking. The net was only a couple of feet away from the cake batter.
"I think I left my lipstick laser at headquarters," Joohyun panicked.
"Well, damn. Now we're really screwed," Seulgi said.
Suddenly the net stopped and all of the machinery in the factory shut down.
"What the-"
"Don't worry, guys. I brought back up," a familiar voice said. The three girls looked and saw Sooyoung running toward them holding Joohyun's lipstick laser. She stopped at the control panel near the vat and moved the net away from the cake batter vat. She then easily climbed up the side of the vat and cut open the net with the lipstick laser.
"How?"
"I got Wendy-unnie's distress call and as soon as I landed I hacked the system," Sooyoung explained.
"Good job, Joy," Wendy complimented her with a pat on the back.
"Yeah, no kidding. If it weren't for you, it would've been death by cake batter," Seulgi added.
Joohyun was about to thank her too, but then:
"Nice work, ladies," Kris said out of nowhere. He was holding a handcuffed Betty Crocker. "And to you, Ms. Crocker, you'll be spending some time in the WYF holding cell."

St. Mary's Senior High School -12:34 pm
Joohyun inhaled a lungful of air and exhaled heavily. She closed her locker and gave herself a mental pep talk.
'This is the day, Joohyun. You're going to initiate conversation and not be awkward or cold-looking.'
"Hi, Joohyun-unnie," Sooyoung's cheery voice rang from behind her.
"Holy crap, you scared me!" Joohyun screamed as she quickly turned around. Once realizing who called out to her, she calmed down and nervously said, "Oh, sorry. Hi, Sooyoung."
"Sorry for scaring you, unnie," Sooyoung apologized. "I'll leave you now-"
"Wait!" Joohyun stopped her before she was able to walk off. She could feel her hands become clammy and her heartbeat quicken. Her face hardened to a serious expression and she said, "You did really well on the mission. I look forward to working with you in the future."
"Oh thank God!" Sooyoung exclaimed happily, revealing a killer smile. Joohyun was confused
"What?"
"I was so worried that you didn't want to work with me because I seemed so useless," Sooyoung explained. Joohyun immediately felt terrible. Had she led her crush to think she hated her? Holy crap she had to fix this. "I wanted to prove that I was worthy-"
"You didn't have to!" Joohyun spoke up as soon as Sooyoung finished. "I mean... you didn't have to prove anything to me. Kris always picks top notch people to work under him." She looked down at a dirty mark on the floor so she didn't have to look at Sooyoung. "Plus, I've always thought you were great... even before I knew you were a spy." She looked away from the floor and made eye contact.
"I always thought you hated me," Sooyoung said.
"Yeah, turns out I don't," Joohyun nervously joked. "I'm not really good with words. Sorry."
"It's fine."
"Sometimes you gotta be bold," Seulgi's annoying voice rang in her head.
"Do you want to go for a movie after school? Just the two of us?" Joohyun asked.
"I'd love to!" Sooyoung replied. The bell rang alerting to two of them that class was about to start.
"Can I walk you to class?" Joohyun suggested. Sooyoung nodded and the two of them walked toward the stairwell.
"Get some!" Wendy screamed from the trashcan she and Seulgi were hiding behind. Wendy received a text a couple of seconds later from Joohyun.
Irene:
I should be telling that to you and your forty year old boyfriend.
"He's twenty-seven!"
Disclaimer: I have nothing against Betty Crocker. In fact, I use her cake mixes very often. Also I started this when Red Velvet first debuted. You can see how much I put this off.
