Inspiration Falls

The woman is older, now, and she is famous. The world has celebrated the strange and wild delights in her articles, the bizarre beauty in the most commonplace settings. She has hundreds of bylines, dozens of awards.

But whenever someone asks the inevitable question, there is only one story she tells. It is her favorite.

"When I was a little girl, I lived in a high-rise in mid-Manhattan. One day, I saw a man parachute off a balcony." Her eyes sparkle with remembered glee, and she leans toward the interviewer. "He fell right past me. He was wearing a suit-not a jumpsuit, but a really beautiful suit. I was sure he looked straight at me and smiled. And when he landed, he simply picked up a hat from the street, put it on, and walked away. It was the most wonderful thing I'd ever seen.

"No one else seemed to notice. No one believed me. But from that day on, I knew that the world was full of marvelous secrets. I wish I could thank that man somehow-because that's why I started writing."

Half a world away, an old man smiles at his television.

"You're welcome," he says.

A Knight to Remember
"Gotta hand it to you, Moz: this is the strangest thing you've done yet."

Neal plunged his hand into the bowl, letting the little jump rings slide through his fingers. There were thousands.

"What's so strange about it?" Mozzie looked up, affronted. "We've made dozens of contingency plans. This is just one more."

"But why would we need chainmail?"

"Well, say there was a rogue branch of the Templars, who, as you know, still control-"

Neal groaned, interrupting him. "Oh, forget I asked."

Undaunted, Mozzie adjusted his loupe and picked up the pliers again.

"Always be prepared, Neal. That's my motto."
