Satchmo trotted out of the kitchen and shoved his head into Elizabeth's lap. She looked down and smiled. The dog had a ribbon tied around his neck, with a little velvet bag dangling from it.
"A Mother's Day gift?" She took the ribbon off before he could eat it, and looked inside the bag. "Oh, earrings! Thank you, Satch, what a good boy! You shouldn't have. Let's go get you a treat!"
"Hey, I helped him pick them out," Peter said from the doorway. "Do I get a treat, too?"
"Upstairs," Elizabeth said, and winked.
Peter's eyes lit up.
"Woof."
