Summary: After the anime is over, Grell asks Sebastian a question...
Sebastian wasn't sure why he still bothered to talk to Grell, now that his role as a butler was done. But the demon found himself accepting the shinigami's company on occasion, listening to the sounds of Grell's prattling for lack of anything better to do.
They sat outside in the ruins of the Phantomhive residence one fine summer evening, and Sebastian cradled his favorite black cat in his arms as Grell complained about William's draconian rules. Sebastian only listened with half an ear, far more entertained by stroking the cat's silky fur.
"Are you paying attention to me?" Grell finally demanded huffily, flouncing to his feet and placing his hands on his hips in a decidedly effeminate fashion.
"Of course I am," Sebastian said, giving his best butler's smile. Just because he wasn't required to play the role didn't mean he couldn't enjoy it.
Grell pouted. "Sebas-chan... I really don't see why cats are so awesome."
The blasphemy reminded Sebastian of his former master. "They've got very cute paws," he said pleasantly, pushing on the paw pad to extend the hidden claws.
"That's it?!" Grell's shrill tones caused the cat to put its ears back.
While causing Grell mental agony was fun, Sebastian decided to make it mental pain by encouraging the shinigami to actually use his brain cells. "Didn't you know that cats can contain the souls of the dead?"
With perfect timing, the black cat on Sebastian's lap decided he'd had enough. The ten-pound feline jumped down and set off for parts unknown, but not before turning its blue, blue eyes on Sebastian for one last, knowing look.
