happy day of the dead, btw
It's that most wonderful time of the month. God, I have been. Really really out of it all day. A gif of Lilo's "leave me alone to die" moment would not be out of place.
So I planned on fixing up and posting the JGL/T-Hard fic but my brain is mush. Tomorrow.
But I did promise the other day to tell some Hawaiian Ghost Stories, which I will now do. (see the brain/mush note to set your level of expectations, mk.)
Some of these I know because of Chickenskin, a collection of Hawaiian ghost stories. Some of them gave me nightmares as a kid. The ghosts with smooth faces like eggshells, holy fuck. I remember waking up shaking, terrified to roll over because I was sure one was standing over me.
I remember the stories about the goddess Pele and the--apologies for ignorance, i don't know his name and google is being difficult--the god of the wild pigs, and their divorce which split the island, and now Bad Shit Happens when you take pork to the side of the island that belongs to Pele. I remember the story of a taxi driver who's last fare forgot a bbq pork sandwich in the back and the driver lost control of his vehicle when a pair of ice cold, invisible hands wrapped around his neck from behind.
But mostly, I remember that I've got a couple stories of my own.
The first is from friends of my parents, who were at a party in Oahu when a man dressed in traditional native Hawaiian clothing and ornaments walked through a motherfucking wall and disappeared.
And I remember how one time my family was at a Hawaiian temple almost off the beaten path, and my little brother (who was about ten) wiggled under the fencing and dug a little hole in the dirt. Ten minutes later we were walking on the rocks by the ocean, and a huge wave leapt up out of nowhere and completely drenched him, almost knocking him to his knees. My dad was standing six inches away and didn't get a drop on him.
So yeah, I would have thought Danny was being a culturally insensitive asshole without any of this stuff coloring my opinion. But now I think he was being a culturally insensitive IDIOT. Do you want the island to kill you, Danno? grrr.
