I saw this poster pinned up in my college yesterday:

Guys, it brought me up so short someone almost walked into me. Is homosexuality immoral? What the fuck kind of question is that? "No," I wanted to write underneath it, "Next question." But I didn't have a pen dark enough to do any damage and there were people around and I thought, Maybe he means it ironically? It says humor, it says sensitivity, this is a college sponsored event, it better be about acceptance. And it does say he "examines arguments against homosexual conduct"--so presumably, he's all for it.

But I was talking about it with my mom this morning and I started getting really upset. My throat is hurting now just from writing about it. Is homosexuality immoral? Fuck them. You don't see signs up around school for lectures saying "Is it okay to be black?" It would start a fucking riot. And it just makes me sick, okay, that we still have to ask this question because to some people the answer isn't No, Next Question. It's a small-minded and bigoted yes and I just want to fast forward sixty, eighty, a hundred years to when this guy is out of work because there are no arguments against homosexual conduct, when there are no "easy assumptions," Jesus Christ, what the hell does that even mean?

So yeah. I'm choking back tears in the lobby of the Arts Building just because this guy is employed.

I wish I had an uplifting note to end this on.
ETA: Thanks to some stellar google-fu on tjournal's part I do now: John Corvino writes a weekly column called the Gay Moralist for LOGO Online’s 365gay.com, and was also the recipient of a 2004 Spirit of Detroit Award from the Detroit City Council for his work on behalf of LGBT rights. So he's one of the good guys, and I sincerely wish him luck.

if you were gay, freaking the fuck out
