Catch 22

So, I would like to be able to vote, so I figured I would go ahead and get my driver's license this week. Texas doesn't want me to have a license. They want my car to be registered first. For that, they want me to take my car to an inspection station. Once I've done that I can take my proof of insurance and my inspection to the county tax office. Once I've done that I can then wait for my title. Once I have insurance, inspection, and title I can go to the DPS and present three forms of ID, submit my thumbprint, get photoed, and finally get a license. With that - I can then have a vote that won't matter.

To exercise my right as a citizen I must spend hundreds of dollars and have my thumbprint added to a national database!

What the hell happened in the seven years I was gone that causes Texas to think it can take my thumbprint without accusing me of a crime?

Eighteen years ago I first wanted to enter the workforce. I was told I needed a driver's license to be able to get a job. Back them I didn't understand what driving a car had to do with having a job. I finally got a state ID from the DPS. It peeved me to no end. Now, because I own a car, the hurdles are even more wildly improbable.

My road to democracy begins at a local Quickie-Lube! I feel like I'm in the movie Idiocracy.
