Maybe fate was a bit confused.

Was having them know they liked each other enough or did fate actually want them to be?

Then again, at that point, perhaps fate had already lost control of its own plan because right on the dot of midnight between Christmas Eve and Christmas Day - like coincidences couldn’t have gotten any more cliché, Junno and Tatsuya were staring at each other wide eyed; a cake in Junno’s hands and a box of fried chicken in Tatsuya’s.

They’re both standing in front of the cashier in the midst of the melodramatics of time, awkwardly holding the Christmas treat they intended to buy.

But as the surprise in their eyes and the smile on their mouths subsided, they silently paid; Junno first and he waited for Tatsuya outside.

“So does this mean we should get ready to marry someday?” Junno asked with a smile that brightened under the streetlight.

Tatsuya only chuckled as they walked towards the car park then asked, “But before that, how is this going to work?”

They’d both driven.

Both of their apartments equidistant from where they stood since without meaning to, the intention was to show up at the other’s door with a ‘surprise surprise’ sort of entrance but now-

“I have space”, Tatsuya in a way attempted to answer his own question.

“Is that your way of saying I don’t?” Junno asked, amusement gathering in his eyes.

“You said it, not me”, Tatsuya replied with a smirk then added, “But I also have a kotatsu and a cute little dog”.

Because,

For some reason, that was a whole lot easier than simply inviting Junno over to his place.

Nonetheless, Junno’s face showed delight, “What’s her name?”

“Chibi”, Ueda then moved to the driver’s side of his car, “Follow me”.

Back then, on Junno’s birthday he did indeed call Tatsuya and they had been in constant contact with whispers of late night sweet-nothings but also early morning motivations. But with Christmas being the festive season, Junno had to travel more on not only domestic flights but also a few regionals flights to Hong Kong and the Philippines and even had one all the way to Australia---- and with the season changing, everywhere brightened with twinkling lights and make-believe Santa Claus and in the mix of that, Tatsuya got more contracts to take photos at year end exhibitions and parties and that’s how the perfect time to meet caused them to keep missing each other.

Then just when they’d both gotten a breather and decided to just show up- keep the intention a secret from even each other and also from whoever was controlling the universe, fate once again mingled or did it conspire? But they found themselves face to face- once again fondly thinking of each other.

About twenty minutes later, they pulled up at an apartment complex and without checking for Junno behind him, Tatsuya got out of his car and made his way to the entrance.

“He’s with me”, is all he said to security and before the security guard could confirm the ‘he’, Tatsuya had already made his way to the elevator, pressing send to the text he just written.

Glancing back once, he gasped when upon opening the door, Chibi ran to him making ruff ruff sounds and wagging its tail and that in itself brought much calm to Tatsuya’s mind.

He was nervous.

Even after all they’ve done together and had even confessed, he still felt nervous.

So, before Junno fully came and fully took him over, he wanted a few seconds of quiet time with his dog to calm him lest his heart jumped from his chest and ran away from him.

But Junno’s eagerness couldn’t be tamed and so as soon as he entered the apartment and closed the door, his stare had Tatsuya crippled, rooted and had his heart beating so loudly he was sure Junno could hear.

“Where do you want the cake?” Junno asked but even such a simple line was layered with a much more urgent question... a request they both had.

Tatsuya swallowed, “On the counter over here”.

Step by step, like a tempo beating note by note, Junno made his way over to where Tatsuya was, laid the cake down and as soon as he was about to take what he really wanted, Chibi ran up to him and barked at his legs.

With a smile, Junno bent down and scooped him up, “You’re almost as cute as your owner”, he smiled, his eyes flashing over to Tatsuya who fidgeted on his toes not sure whether to stoop too then lean across and steal a kiss- or should he patiently wait his turn?

“Which do you want first?” he asked instead, turning into the kitchen.

Junno followed behind, “You say first, but what are my options?”

Tatsuya could feel the beating in his chest, its pushy and determined and strong but also sweet, sincere and pure- almost, “Cake, chicken or a cold beer”.

Junno did smile and by the time Tatsuya turned around, Junno was already backing him against the counter and looking him in the eyes with a hungry smile riding his lips, “You forgot the fourth option”, he drawls, leaning in and pressing against Tatsuya.

The body is weak, Tatsuya has always known, so when Junno leaned and touched all the right places, Tatsuya lips released moans asking, “And what would that be?”

Junno chuckled, rocked his hips against Tatsuya and held him in his arms, “Feel that? Why don’t you feed me?”

Really,

Junno was such a sweet talker that Tatsuya worried just how much of the night he would survive before he’s devoured.

But Junno tasted him gently and tasted him kindly and softly and savoured Tatsuya’s lips in his mouth and when minutes past of their lips unable to say goodbye, Junno whispered, “Uepi, I’ve missed you so much- so very much”.

At this point, Tatsuya didn’t even attempt to fight it for he instead left it all to his body and just so, like swinging on a verandah sling, he slowly gave himself over to Junno.

The night burned away in the heat of their bodies and the wetness of their tongues and the expression of earnestness in their calls.

What started on Christmas Eve ended on Christmas day- festive, thankful day that started with warm blankets wrapped around their crisscrossed legs. Junno was already awake and watching Tatsuya grinding his teeth, a little restless in his sleep but also cute in the way he sought out warmth in the cold of December twenty-fifth.

Junno bent forward and kissed Tatsuya’s forehead, supposing he should go make breakfast or at least get some warm drink ready but just as he mustered all his resolve to go, Tatsuya grabbed him by the hem of his briefs and told him, “Don’t leave me alone with the cold”.

So really,

All Junno could do was smile and relax back into bed, watching Tatsuya still shy to openly face him and tell him odes of wanting to be his on this colourful day that’s without its snow but cold enough to make any warmth feel cosy.

“We didn’t even touch the cake”, Junno said, hugging Tatsuya tight around the waist.

“Nor the chicken”, Tatsuya hugged him back, his forehead buried in Junno’s neck.

Silence fell between them giving way to the tick tock of the clock on the wall and Chibi pawing at the door from outside the room.

“Then for breakfast, I’ll make us chicken sandwiches”, Junno wrapped them together even tighter, making no effort to move or rather, it was like he couldn’t bring himself to let go.

Tatsuya made a ew sound, “I hate sweets- but since you took the effort I’ll munch on a piece of cake until the sandwiches are ready”.

Junno laughed at him, “You do that”, loving the weight of Tatsuya’s head on his bare chest and his hands making warm strokes down Tatsuya’s arms.

And beyond Chibi’s constant scratching on the door, Tatsuya could feel Junno’s heartbeat playing like an orchestra mellowing in his chest and somehow, it put Tatsuya at ease as he listened in and smiled.

He wasn’t the only one, they were both nervous.

The clock continued to tick and after much effort, they peeled themselves from each other and as Junno made sandwiches, Tatsuya petted Chibi.

The TV was on with regular Home Alone and Grinch movies. Tatsuya settled on a sports channel.

The truth was,

It all still felt surreal to him but at the same time, it also felt like a dream come true and such a reality he craved so much that for nothing, would he give it up.

So when Junno laid the cups of coffee before him and the warm sandwiches, in a quiet but steady voice Tatsuya asked, “Junno, does this mean we’re boyfriends now?”

Junno stopped in the middle of his chewing, “Now? Haven’t we been boyfriends since the second time we met? I’d like to say since the first time but the second definitely confirmed things, didn’t you think?”

Tatsuya nodded, the tension in his forehead waning, “But you didn’t say it”.

“You didn’t say it either”.

And at that moment, they both felt the intention to properly and honestly convey their feelings derailing a bit and it didn’t help that the silence between them was becoming deafening so much so that even Chibi was looking at them from one to the other, equally confused when in a chorus they replied, “I like you”.

It sounded like a carol.

And at the echo of their confession, they both laughed.

“So is that a yes?” Tatsuya asked.

Junno smiled at him, “Only if you’ll have me”.

Really,

Perhaps they’re both idiots.

But even so,

“Ueda Tatsuya, Tatsuya Ueda, Uepi- I say I like you but maybe it’s more like love”, Junno said and waited.

But even though Tatsuya dodged a reply with a smile, they both understood that that only meant they should use the time they’d just committed to each other to find out more about this love thing they might be feeling.

So Tatsuya really did just smile but in the end said, “Hurry and eat your sandwiches”.

Junno smiled too, he and Tatsuya were feeling seventy percent closer than they did even ten minutes before, “You’re talking like you did any of the work”.

“Of course I did”, Tatsuya replied, pressing a kiss to Chibi’s face, “I did buy the chicken, didn’t I? So technically, I did three-quarters of the work”.

On that day, just about three months of their meeting, in a happy and excited tempo mixed in with the murmur of morning TV they-

“Junno…”

“Yes, Uepi?”

“Ho ho ho”.

Junno smiled then laughed so hard until the happiness reached the crinkles in his eyes. “Happy Christmas to you too”, he replied, his toes brushing warm against Tatsuya’s as Chibi watched them before then barking and hopping on Tatsuya’s legs like he knew he would now have to share.

Really,

This was a moment Tatsuya earnestly wanted to freeze too.

“…Junno.”

“Yes, Uepi?”

“These sandwiches are dry.”

“Oops! Sorry”.

“… and yes, perhaps I love you, too.”

A/N: ... OK so yeah. Maybe I'm getting greedy because even though this ending can be considered 'closed'... it's still left a bit 'open' so we'll see. This may or may not be the final installment of this series ;) *smiles, hugs and keep warm*
