“Why is it that every time we meet it’s raining?”

Tatsuya lightly chuckled, amused but also hoping to mask the fidgety nerves in his voice, “You say every time but technically, it’s only the second time”.

Junno is all smiles while silently directing Tatsuya down a less busy street. Tatsuya allowed himself to be led away. They’re holding hands walking under the drizzle and he’s loving the coolness sprinkling all over his skin. It’s almost as though the rain knows what he was feeling.

"Two men at our age holding hands while walking in the rain, isn't that stupid?" Tatsuya asked, feeling conscious of the lover's pact they're making.

"No," Junno answered tightening his hold betwixt Tatsuya's fingers, "It's perfectly perfect."

Tatsuya didn't reply but the smile in his eyes and around his lips shared his heart's secret.

He was happy for the unexpected meeting.

“So where are you taking me?” he eventually asked.

Because, before then, they still hadn’t said much to each other but they had continued down the street walking so close like they had missed and craved each other’s heat and touch.

“To meet some friends.”

Tatsuya slowed in his steps, thinking it’s too early to meet the friends when he and Junno hadn’t even exchanged phone numbers.

'Why is everything about them happening out of order?' he wondered.

“And we’re here”, Junno announced and it became too late for Tatsuya to make up an excuse so he quietly followed Junno, his heart beating in his throat as they walked to a table with two other guys waiting.

The closer they got the table, Tatsuya could feel the stares on him reading every crevice of him and he fidgets some more, not sure if to stay closer to Junno or step away.

“And here we are troubled over what to get you”, states the guy with a messy head of blond hair, painted black nails and looking like he’s about to perform hard rock music on stage, “But from the look of things, it seems like you’ve already got yourself a gift”.

With the way Tatsuya’s forehead crinkled and the begging eyes he gave Junno, it was clear he had no idea what was going on but he nonetheless stood firm with a light nod and a smile that softly tugged at his lips.

“It’s my birthday”, Junno filled him in, giving Tatsuya way into the cushioned seat.

Tatsuya’s eyes widened at that the coincidence - that slim chance of meeting each other on their birthdays. “Is this fate or coincidence?” he asked before he could stop himself.

Junno smiled, “What’s the difference?”

“What are you guys talking about?” Kame drew closer, almost halfway over the table, looking at Tatsuya like he’d never seen a man like him before - a beautiful man with eyes that are both youthful and old.  A bit wild and untrusting but at the same time want to believe.

“We first met on Tatsuya’s birthday”, Junno supplied, in a tone that suggested he knew what inquisition that confession would open and he was right.

“When was it?” Kame continued, snuggled back into the couch against Koki with a smirk playing on his lips.

“Last month”, Junno answered in a tone like he’s trying to be nonchalant but that only gave him away and played right into the tease as both Koki and Kame looked at each other then back at him.

“You mean this is-“

“Ssssh”, Junno responded but it was already too late to hide his embarrassment, much to Tatsuya’s curiosity.

Kame laughed, pouring some beer into Tatsuya’s glass, “Now we see why Junno couldn’t stop talking about you”.

Like information overload, Tatsuya tried to process what was happening by buying himself some time in the prolonged way he sipped his beer before then turning to Junno and asked, “You talked about me?”

Without looking Tatsuya’s in the eye, Junno poked some edamame into his mouth then mumbled, “I might’ve mentioned you”.

“More like he wouldn’t shut up about you”, Koki laughed, he and Kame were having far too much fun with this.

But somehow, Tatsuya loved it and he found himself laughing. Seated next to Junno and across from Junno’s friends had somehow--- somehow, he felt right at home when all of a sudden, Kame added, “Tatsuya, hurry and make a man out of him before his well runs dry and his manly rod becomes too rusty to use”.

Tatsuya nearly choked on the edamame he was chewing on, “What do you mean?” he asked, watching Kame and Koki who couldn’t stop laughing. Even Junno found himself choking at the sudden straightforward request.

“Tatsuya, ignore them”, Junno once again tried to play it nonchalant.

But Koki would have none of that, “It means, no matter how much we tried to set him up it’s like he insists on not getting laid - he keeps going on about some shit like saving the rest of himself until he finds his fated one… can you believe it? In these modern times, he’s thinking such ludicrous things”.

Tatsuya took another sip of his beer. Surely, if looked at on its own, his and Junno’s meeting might seem like a glitch in coincidences but back in Kagoshima, Junno never hesitated to devour him so he couldn’t quite understand what Koki and Kame were saying.

And it was that quiet contemplative atmosphere that made Kame quickly realise, “Wait, don’t tell me you two already-“

The smile on Junno was too much for him to hide but the revelation had Koki leaning back into his seat more amazed than amused and Kame’s smirk could not be contained.

Junno sipped on his beer, “Are you happy now?”

.

By the time their birthday celebration was over, the night was almost done as they staggered out on the damped street.

“If I’d known you’d given up celibacy, I would’ve gotten you an overnight stay at a fancy hotel as a gift”, Kame joked.

“And a few boxes of condoms”, Koki added.

And when Junno groaned and Tatsuya flushed, the other two laughed with Koki bowing to Tatsuya, “He’s an idiot with a kind heart but, please take care of our Taguchi”.

Tatsuya smiled, not sure if they were even at that stage in their relationship or even if they had a relationship to begin with but more or less, he understood clearly what everything meant.

“Thanks for allowing me to crash your party”, he returned.

“Well…” Koki winked at Junno, “Go have and enjoy your after party”.

No one answered but their smiled said it all.

Finally alone, they stood in the middle of the sidewalk, and with his hands in his pocket, Tatsuya fidgets from right to left, trying to ignore how loud the silence between them was and how much his heart suddenly started to misbehave like it intended to escape his chest and land in Junno’s arms.

“Shall we go?” Junno asked with a smile that’s as flushed with innocence as it was ripe with desire and truly, Tatsuya wanted to tip on his toes, lean across and kiss him sweet on the lips.

The night was chilly and uncertain but also cosy and hopeful.

To think that they’d meet again on a night like this was-

“Where are you taking me this time?” Tatsuya asked when they hopped on a city bus.

“To the after party”, Junno smiled, the mirth in his eyes belayed nothing but nonetheless, Tatsuya followed him, sitting on the bus beside him and warming each other’s side.

“What do you do?” Junno asked.

When it came to them, things really were happening out of order.

Tatsuya groaned, the sort of sound that sounded like answering is no big deal but he would prefer not talking about it, “Now you decide to ask?”

But Junno can’t take a hint, “We have time”.

Tatsuya sighed, “I freeze people's memories”.

Junno’s eyes widen before his forehead crumpled into a frown, “I’m really too drunk to figure out your riddle”.

The bus made a turn and continued down an inconspicuous area of high-rise buildings. When they got off, Tatsuya looked around and noted they’d arrived at one of those hideaway neighbourhood hotels tucked between residential apartments. It made him wonder how Junno came to know a place like this. But of course, he could already figure that out.

But Junno read a different reaction as he smiled and told Tatsuya, “Don’t worry, I won’t kidnap you”.

Tatsuya did smile, “Darn, and here I was hoping you would”.

Walking down the hall leading in from the lobby, Junno’s laugher echoed as he reached behind him for Tatsuya’s hand.

Tatsuya didn’t refuse and in a silence beat, they took the elevator.

Half way to the designated floor, Junno asked, “Why did you never call me?”

Tatsuya paused, thinking hard because truly, he himself didn’t know.  Perhaps.

He should’ve called.

He really wanted to.

He almost did.

But his stubborn side always won over and in the end he answered, “I was busy”.

Not that Junno knew anything about him to call him a liar or coward.

But Junno didn’t have to say it because Tatsuya already knew.

That time in Kagoshima, Tatsuya had tasted something he couldn’t yet explain nor accept but at the same time, he wanted to grab it and gobble it but, but-

Did happiness truly come that easily?

And if happiness was found that easily then why did his heart wait all this time to find and accept it?

Even as Junno unlocked the door, he was still holding Tatsuya’s hand and as soon as they reached inside, he pulled Tatsuya and cornered him against the wall, “You still haven’t wished me a happy birthday”.

Tatsuya’s breath was caught somewhere between his mouth and his lungs. It almost felt like he’d forgotten how to breathe but he did manage to ask, “Then tell me, what would you like?”

And without a second to waste, Junno promptly answered, “To know you. To be with you”.

The breath caught in Tatsuya’s throat finally made a heavy exhale, the heart in his chest really wanting jump and cling to Junno but somehow, he found the restraint to remain calm. “Then where do you suggest we start?”

When Tatsuya’s lips caught up with Junno’s, the kiss was cold from them walking in the cold but with a few licks and their constant kissing, the air they puffed was warm like a fire hearth.

Tatsuya inhaled and he could smell his own desire roasting inside him. Junno too, breathed in and exhaled everything he’d been holding in, his lips still pressed against Tatsuya’s even though they’d stopped kissing.

“Tatsuya, can I be with you?” Junno asked again, “That’s really what I want for my birthday”.

Tatsuya groaned, leaned forward on his toes and sealed his lips to Junno’s neck, “You won't make this easy, will you?”

And again, the silence between them loudly told them each other's need... their desire even before Junno answered, “I just want to make claim to my treasure before it gets taken away”.

Really, the words Junno said and the things he did made Tatsuya excited as much as they scared him- it was like, they gave him clarity but also left him with complicated scary feelings.

Without saying a word, Tatsuya clasped Junno’s face in his palms, pulled him forward and down and kissed him again and this time, he didn’t let go- and just like that, clinging to each other by the mouth they made their way to the bedroom- stumbling until they both fell onto the bed and even then, they didn’t allow themselves to separate.

The night saw them melt into each other in both matters of the heart and body.

Tatsuya was in so much heat last night that he didn’t even notice the huge glass that made up the hotel’s walls and having cosied up with Junno, he still wouldn’t have noticed if it wasn’t for the morning sun rising and colouring the whole room in an orangey crimson. Squinting, he soon remembered where he was and who he was with and while he’d wanted to stay in bed and cuddle, the morning sun was calling him so he carefully unfurled himself from Junno and tiptoed across the room and when he looked outside, he had to wonder if mornings were always that beautiful.

Taking in a deep breath, he turned around and looked at Junno who’s still sleeping.

From where Tatsuya stood, there was an angel in the bed and last night he’d slept with that angel. Taking in another deep breath, he turned back around and soaked up the morning sun, thinking how nice it would be to ring in the New Year and watch the first sun with Junno.

And even before that, they could even celebrate Christmas together.

He was just about to become completely lost in his daydream when his phone alarmed and the fright of it sent him hopping over their clothes that were still strewn across the floor.

When he finally got his phone, he looked over at Junno, amazed that Junno didn’t even stir and sighed when he checked the time and the alarm note on his phone.

His life might’ve changed or is changing but he still had work and if he didn’t pull himself away from Junno then he would be late. So cursing under his breath, he grabbed his clothes, got dressed and just before he left, he stood awhile over Junno and watched him slept, hovering but dared himself not to touch, not trusting his self-control. But he phone sent out a fourth alarm, he hissed while scribbling a note and then dropped it on the table and left.

When Junno finally turned and smiled in his sleep, his smile soon faltered when he realised the other side of the bed was empty. Sitting up, he looked at the daylight full outside the glass windows and while a part of him wanted to rejoice at getting a second chance with Tatsuya, the other part wept that there might never be a third.

When next would they meet?

On Christmas Eve by a random skating ring?

Or, perhaps on Mount Takao on New Year’s Day?

A part of him was sad but another part of him was hopeful that if they really did meet again then surely they were meant to be.

With such thoughts, the morning ran away and it was almost time for checkout and that was when-  just as he was dressed and about ready to leave that he spotted the ten thousand dollar note that left him smiling brighter than the yellow in the morning sun.

Because, on that ten thousand yen bill was scribbled Tatsuya's phone number as well as;

‘I’ll grant your wish… happy birthday to you’.

.

And so, when Tatsuya’s phone beeped a few hours later, he wished he could also freeze that memory.

A/N: ... OK so clearly this is continuing. I guess because of the pace I can't just have them 'hooking up' after sleeping together twice, so let's see what happens next. At least now they both accept their attraction and 'need' for each other XD But in any case, I hope you had a decent read :)
