Fandom... (again)

Nov 18, 2012 11:53

I'm very aware that some of my fandom opinions (such as not sharing paid content, etc) aren't very popular and cause a lot of criticism behind my back. I'm not stupid, I do see the comments. I don't actively defend myself against them, because I don't care.

I make my opinions known in my own LJ and on my own Twitter. I don't go searching out people who post things I don't agree with and ask them to take it down (unless it's in OGYD as that's just enforcing the comm rules and nobody has ever been banned or warned about it, FYI). Instead, I usually stop following anyone that I know who does it and avoid Tumblr like the plague for this very reason.

I don't believe that because you're a fan, that you automatically have a right to access everything. And this is nothing to do with some elitist view that only some fans should see certain things, it's simply that I believe it's up to the artist (or their management/record label/whatever) to choose how and why things are released. It's their content. They have the right to distribute it however they wish. If, for example, DEARS closed their doors tomorrow there suddenly wouldn't be a free MGG for everyone to view every month. They'd stop producing it. Your life isn't made poorer by not having every single photo of GACKT in existence. Really.

Take GACKT's Nico Nico blog as another example. I dearly wish that he had shared the tattoo explanation in his public blog (and said so as soon as the blog was first published), but for some reason he chose not to. Personally I think that was a dumb decision and something that he should have shared with everyone and maybe he will in the future sometime, but it's his explanation, his words and his blog. I just think that if I had put something in a locked entry and decided not to share it publicly, and then someone shared it publicly, I'd be pretty pissed about it. I would never do that to someone on my F-list here, or someone who posts stuff privately on their Facebook, so why do it to him? Even if I completely disagree with him? I realise Nico is paid and keeping things in there increases the chances of people spending money on it, but I do think the principle is the same.

Okay, that was a little tangent I didn't mean to go on, lol. What I was going to say is that I don't really care if people disagree with me or talk behind my back on this. Fandom is meant to be a little fun addition to your life and not something that dominates it so the opinions of people I'll probably never meet don't really register that highly on my fuck giving metre XD

(Although the fact that I've written an entry about it kinda contradicts that last sentence, hahahahaha)

Oh, and on the spoilers front... yes, I know I tweeted a lot of spoilers about the YFCz tours but I was, quite rightly, called out on that by a friend and stopped. I didn't spoil anything about MOON SAGA (I even had someone living with me at the time and she went into her first viewing of it completely unaware of anything) and don't tweet spoilers about 悪夢ちゃん when I watch that live either. All it needs is an LJ or Tumblr cut.

My first Gakuen show isn't for three weeks yet I know pretty much everything that's happening thanks to tweets and retweets :-( And that's just a statement, not me bitching at anyone. What's done is done.

gackt, fandom
