Summary: That incident in the woods during an exercise that we do not talk about.
Table/Prompt: Crime table, abduction

It was supposed to be the easy part of the training exercise, at least for the instructors. Have the kids be “captured” and ship them off to interrogation by adults they had never seen before. Their instructors knew them intimately and had their codes and radio frequencies and plans.

What Hayate had been was cold and wet and his cough was coming back. And annoyed. Annoyed at having to comb the woods for one trainee who had been missed in the pick-up and they’d been looking for for a week with no more luck than a broken radio.

His former annoyance was completely lost in the terror he was feeling now, tied up with a girl screaming at him about who he was and where her team was. Her interrogation technique was off from how she’d been taught but that made her even more dangerous. This was a terrified and panicked teenager with an agent’s combat training. She was even crying.

Hayate thought his ribs might be cracked though maybe only bruised from her sitting on his chest. He coughed blood all the time so no telling if it was a lung injury. She had his hands in her own calloused ones and looked ready to break fingers as a warning.

Keeping in character in a training exercise definitely did not cover times when his life was in danger and the blonde looked ready to storm to the compound, kill everyone, and free the captives single-handedly after killing him.

“Where did everyone go?!” she demanded again and he could feel the bones in his hand grind.

“Temari Sabaku, stop!” he yelled then followed it with a name.

She stopped at the second as abruptly as a puppet with its strings cut. “It’s all an exercise then? Oh, I’m sorry, sir. Are you hurt?”

Hayate coughed again. “Yes, though nothing more than my pride.” He sat up as best he could still tied up. “What have you been doing the last week?”

“I got lost.” She looked as embarrassed as she should have. “On the way back from the last mission objective I got separated from my team on the way to the rendezvous and my radio broke. I found a farm house and the couple there stayed in character with me and fed me and let me stay but I couldn’t figure out the clues for where to go next from them and I think I asked them every code for every hint and went over every inch for a square mile. Then I found the campsite, I mean base, and it was ransacked and everyone was gone. I was starting to doubt if it was a game and I’d thought they’d been captured and I followed the tire tracks and I was afraid,” she finished very quickly.

“You were supposed to think that.” There was little point not telling her the details since she’d be able to work them out herself very quickly. “It’s a capture and interrogation scenario. If you go to the road three miles northwest of here my team will pick us up. The others are doubting if it’s a game or if it’s real. Don’t tell them you’re one hundred percent sure.”

“Alright.” She didn’t untie him, just carry/dragged him to the road to sit in the middle of it with the hog-tied full agent and his gun on her lap as she sat cross-legged. “I’ll play along once I’m there and keep anything I do low key. No telling or staging rebellions.”

Hayate looked over at her from the uncomfortable position he was stuck in and considered what she’d have been doing if she’d been captured and believed it to be real. “I’d heard of you, Temari Sabaku. The wonder girl who tracked us down. I never expected to learn you live up to your reputation in quite this way. Boss will be proud once he’s done thoroughly chewing us both out.”
