Calling home was always a rough, if necessary, part of the week, but her mother insisted and it usually meant Caroline suffered through a one-sided conversation about work and Mystic Falls gossip while avoiding anything remotely interesting about her life in Fandom until they managed to get into an argument over something neither of them cared about and someone hung up huffily.
After five minutes of decent catching up on this particular Sunday, Caroline found herself remembering what Jake had said about how she only had one mother and maybe she should be trying just a little bit harder to gain some understanding and honesty about who she was between them.
Which somehow turned into Caroline gushing to her mother about Jake and inadvertently starting a fight about how she focused too much on boys and not enough on school and blah blah blah Caroline stopped listening and started rolling her eyes and flapping her hand open and closed as her mother droned on. "Yes mother, and if I wanted to become a dried up, lonely career woman, I would take your advice. Too bad I'm not you and don't actually like being miserable!"
Yeah, probably not the best moment to hang up, but it was that or scream into the line in frustration. Flopping back against her cot, Caroline closed her eyes, tucking her phone against her side and feeling completely awful about everything. "God, how does she do that?"
