Yesterday, on the way to drop Matt off at his temp job, we heard on the radio that schools would be closed and so would several municipal offices due to the fact that Tropical Storm Ernesto was coming through and they expected "high winds and heavy rain" - high winds being 35mph sustained or so. Now, we were outside... it was drizzling... and breezy, but sure, it could get worse.... *rolls her eyes* The only "rain" we got was the drizzle we got in the morning and as for the wind... even if it DID reach 35mph sustained in some places, which I highly doubt (gusts to 35, sure) - that's not exactly a force to reckon with - it's not like it makes driving unsafe even... just a bit... harder. When I think about what it took in NJ to get schools to close, I laugh (and cry a little inside) at how much people down here over react to the weather. The first year Matt and I were down here it actually "snowed" during the "winter" - it was actually flurries and wasn't even sticking to the road (just to bushes and other non-warm things) - and people virtually went into a panic! The grocery stores were hit hard for staples and things that don't spoil like canned food and bottled water, offices were closed early, people were driving 25mph (or slower) on the highways... it was crazy. I remember sitting at my desk when it started snowing and everyone except me and the other transplant from the north RAN to the windows like 5 year olds and planted their faces against the window to watch the snow, that was funny ^_^ Now, I can sort of understand the south's reaction to snow, since they dont' get it often.... but they can't handle rain either which just boggles my mind since it rains all the time here!

The only effect that TS Ernesto had directly on me was to make it actually comfortable to be on the boat in the middle of the summer. It was cloudy and windy, so only probably hit 80-85 degrees during the day instead of 95-100 with a heat index well over 100. It did have a bit more of an effect directly on the boat though. When it gets windy (even 10mph can do this) it makes the boat harder to control - since it's, under "normal" circumstances, already hard to control, that's not a good thing. We were getting ready to depart from City Hall Landing at one point, I had already lifted the line and was about to throw it and I saw some people start to come down the ramp. I could pretty readily put the line back on the cleat if the captain just remanuvered a bit and we could pick them up. So I asked said captain what he wanted to do - he wanted to go and not wait for these people... so, ok, I told them they weren't going to make it because we were leaving then and the captain wasn't going to wait for them... so they started running *rolls her eyes again!*... We left them standing on the ramp almost to the boat.... so they didn't make it. Once I got on, the captain told me the reason he didn't want to wait for them was because of the wind - it was kicking up a bit and making it hard for him to keep the boat at the dock - very logical reason. Two trips later the people came back to the boat and rode it over. When they first got on, I didn't even realize it was the same people, they didn't mention anything about leaving them there... Not until we docked the boat on the other side and I let them off, the following transpired:

- As they passed me, the man said "You might want to consider having a better attitude when it comes to dealing with people. Try being nice sometime and see where it gets you!" (or something really close to that) in a really snippy/curt way. I was pretty much flabbergasted since I still didn't know who they were and had NO idea what he was talking about!
- So I said, "I'm sorry sir, I'm not sure what you're getting at, what are you referring to?"
- And he said - as they continued to walk away, part way up the ramp, "Oh you know! Just think about it a minute and you'll remember."
- Me, "Really, sir, I don't know what you mean." And he proceded to give HIS version of what happened when we left them, which had them standing on the dock next to the gate waiting to get on and me getting on right infront of them and shutting the door on them... -_- all while he's STILL walking away from me so he has to shoult in order for me to hear him.
- So I said, "Sir, there's a very logical explanation for this, if you'd just come back here I could explain to you in a NORMAL conversation."
- Man, "NO! I don't want to talk about it." And they finished they're journey off the ramp and we never saw them again....

o_O WTF? (oh, and for the record, I DO call the male passengers "sir" for the most part... I wasn't trying to be like in Romeo and Juliet "Do you bite your thumb at me - SIR?" *giggles*)
