One of my top two hardest days at work

Today was supposed to be state testing. It was our first day of testing. I was in my room, prepping and going over the procedures and dipped into the hall to hit the bathroom before the kids came in about 10 minutes before they'd arrive.

Was pulled into a side room with a bunch of staff and informed that our student, the eleven year old shot in the drive by, passed away late last night. I felt my heart just hit the floor and looked at the faces of everyone just blank.

We had ten minutes to deal and prep and that was operating in near panic. I knew the kids would know, although the family hadn't really told anyone and we were basically told to play dumb as to not upset the family.

The kids came and clusters were passing it around and then it became a kind of grievance triage. Counselors, school psychologists, parent liaisons started immediately and I did my best to just hold it together enough to get the kids ready for testing while the bosses made frantic calls to the state pleading for another day. There's no way the kids could have taken the test.

We did our best to get them help as needed and still try to run according to some routine.

I feel like I've been run over by a truck today.
