1. Angst
Dead.
They tell Catty that Jaina is dead.
And she laughs at first, because no. That can't be right. This is Jaina they're talking about. Jaina.
Their faces remain bleak, and it begins to sink in. Jaina is dead. It's not possible. She shakes her head, repeats the words over and over, because she can't believe it. She refuses to believe it. Her heart clenches and her eyes burn, and it's like her whole body is rebelling over what her conscious mind won't accept. Because Jaina dead means that she'll never come back.
They'll never share a drink again, or a laugh. There won't be someone there to understand her on a level their husbands don't know how to match just right.
It means that Catty has failed her partner by not being there, because she retired. Because she left. And Jaina is dead.
It's her fault. Catty knows it. She groans, leans over, clenches her fingers. She's going to be sick, she knows it. She killed Jaina. Why didn't any one save her? Why was nobody there to stop her?
Whywhywhywhywhywhywhywhy.
Her hand presses to her mouth, and in that instant, she wishes she could die, too.
She senses Ren near her, wanting to comfort her, and she shakes her head violently. Because she doesn't want to be touched.
She just wants them to tell her they're lying.
2. AU
Finally, Catty's wand lowered, her shoulders slumping. “I can't kill you.”
Jaina stared at her, and though she was shorter, Catty felt tiny in that dark stare. She waited for Jaina to do what she had been promising to do.
She waited for Jaina to kill her.
“I knew that you wouldn't have it in you,” Jaina said quietly, her voice soft and mournful, and she almost sounded like the old Jaina, the one who had been a top Auror, who had been a damn good Jedi. Catty stared back at her, waiting for the inevitable.
Instead, Catty was met with a crooked smile. “I need you, Catty.”
It was such a long way to fall into the darkness.
Maybe Catty always was meant to be just like her mother, a traitor.
3. Crack
“I am not wearing that,” Jaina firmly expressed, face burning with rage or embarrassment. Catty was sure it might have been a little bit of both.
The taller woman held up the tiny plaid miniskirt in front of her, staring at Jaina expectantly. “But it would look really cute on you!”
“I've already agreed to go out with you to this club. Do I really have to do this?”
“Pleeeeease~?” She batted her lashes, shaking the skirt. “You can't go to a club looking like... A man.”
“Catty.” Jaina's voice held a dangerous tone, but Catty continued to smile as though she were expecting Jaina to cave at any moment.
-
“You have nice legs,” Catty commented.
“Expect training to last for an hour longer.”
4. Crossover [Sleeping Beauty]
The lady knight leaned over the bed where the sleeping princess lied, long brown hair surrounding her pretty face. The knight had fought dragons and witches to get here, and this was what she was greeted with?
“Get up.” She jabbed the princess in her side.
With an irritated snort, the princess's eyes snapped open. “Next time you use me as bait to take down an evil sorceress, I'm not wearing a frilly dress.”
5. First Time
The situation is hopeless.
They both feel it, both feeling like they won't make it out alive. And they're both blaming themselves for not being able to get the other out alive.
It's pure desperation, Catty tells herself, as she grabs the smaller woman, and their lips meet. Catty doesn't want to die like this, without feeling something. It's a surprise when Jaina kisses her back.
It's an even bigger surprise when they actually live.
6. Fluff
Jaina didn't even need to open her eyes to know that the person who sat next to her was her partner. Who else would flop herself around like that, anyway? Catty leaned over, until her head could fit on the smaller woman's shoulder, a soft sigh filling the space around them.
“You need to sleep more,” Jaina finally said.
Catty nodded. “I know.”
“You're going to end up addicted to those potions if you keep taking them. Tell Ren to go home.”
Catty snorted. “I'll be careful with the potions. And it's not Ren.”
“Then it is the potions. Come on, we'll go to my place. Jim is gone for the month.”
“You do care,” Catty teased, getting up when Jaina did, shuffling after her.
“Can't have my partner falling asleep on the chase.”
7. Humor
“Look at who has taken the plunge~” Catty teased her friend happily after the awkward dismissal of a marriage between Sakura and Guy and the surprise marriage of Jaina and Jim.
The glare only made made her grin all the brighter.
The cake shoved into her face made her laugh.
“You're feeding the wrong person cake.”
8. Hurt/Comfort
Catty didn't like Jim's return, even if it was her own fault. He didn't give up the information quietly, but finally Jim had left with Jaina's address, and she knew that it was for the best. Jaina needed him, and Catty loved Jaina enough to give her what it was that she wanted. She didn't have anything against Jim. He was her friend, she enjoyed being around him, but she didn't want to lose Jaina.
The number of nights Catty spent at Jaina's apartment dwindled into dismal numbers. She didn't want to trample on Jaina's happiness, didn't want to frown every time Jim burst through the front door and Jaina scowled deeply, the hint of a happy twinkle in her brown eyes. No, she didn't want to ruin what Jaina had been too stupid to go after.
Even though it hurt.
Even though she was lonely.
And then, out of nowhere, Ren came back to her.
“How did you know where I lived?” She curled up next to him, nuzzling against his chest.
“Jaina gave it to me.”
Catty smiled in the dark, kissing Ren. So Jaina had known she was hurting.
9. Smut
“I don't understand why you need to sleep in my bed.”
“Your couch is too hard.”
“Go home.”
“Too far.”
With a snort, Jaina rolled over, her back to the bed invader. Catty curled up against Jaina's back, face pressing into her neck, arm lazily snaking around her waist. The older Auror stiffened, eyes popping open.
“Catty.”
“What?”
“Stop that.”
“Stop what?”
“Your hand is under my shirt.”
“I know.”
With a sigh, Jaina rolled back over until she had Catty on her back, knee pressed between her legs. “You always do this when you're drunk.”
Catty moved her hips so that she was grinding slowly against Jaina's leg, desperate to get that friction. “And you always give in.”
10. UST
The showers at the office was horrid and cramped, and that was mostly because it wasn't meant for two people at once. But there was no time for the partners to shower separately, and Catty being Catty was all for sharing the shower. What did it matter? They were both girls anyway, right?
With a sigh, Jaina followed her eager partner in, keeping her eyes glued to the floor as they stood side by side, wet and naked skin almost touching as they shared the same spray of water. It was awkward, and as much as Jaina tried to not look at Catty, she couldn't help it. It was hard, after all, when they were in such a tight space, and any movement the taller woman made drew attention to herself.
“Hey, Jaina. Can you wash my back?”
“Wash your own back!” She huffed before stomping out of the shower, soap still dripping from her hair.
