Downton Abbey - season 4, episode 2

Nowhere near high octane, but I liked it all the more for that. The main big thing was Matthew’s letter making Mary his heiress. I snorted at Isobel’s comment that she was glad Matthew’s voice got heard, because of course there was no Dan Stephens to do a voiceover, but then we had irony instead, because Robert was the one person who didn’t to share power with Mary. However, the rest of the family was against him.

I did think it was fitting, given all the stuff with the entail, that Mary got this chance to use her brain (what did she do in the last series but float around, reading Vogue, snarking at Edith and wonder why she wasn’t pregnant yet?) and her fair dues as the eldest child. So, well responded to on that score, Julian Fellowes. And Matthew’s love for Mary and her loss came through beautifully through the letter.

I see no reason to drop my Branson/Mary theories, despite the knee-high socks and the fact he looked short in some shots. He did a couple of epic things in this episode. First, there was the appreciation of Violet, who was on form WRT Roberts and Mary. Violet should be appreciated. Secondly, there was The Line. Even if it doesn’t make Mary swoon, it made me swoon, it should make women all over swoon and remind us that before Fellowes wrote the relationship wrong for much of series 2 and 3, Sybil/Branson was adorable. “I want to know what Lady Mary thinks.”

Oh, yes.

Edna was too busy to cross paths with him, but surely she must at some juncture. In the meantime, a new alliance between Thomas (boo!) and Gullible Cora’s Scheming Lady’s Maid was formed, to the detriment of Anna and Bates, who had some really nice Mr and Mrs Bates moments.

Also, re feeling shippy, I felt Mrs Hughes/Carson far more than I ever did before (I generally don’t find he comes up to scratch for her high levels of awesome). With her, Isobel and his conscience ranged against him, he did the right thing, and I rather loved the fact that an old friendship that had turned sour got the romantic train station treatment.

The four young lovers stuff continues and I still don’t really care, because it probably won’t lead to the best thing for Daisy, which would be getting away from Downton and making her own life (be that with tall Alf cooking up a storm with modern devices or not).

Like Gwen did! GWEN! It only took them nearly eight years, in show time, to mention you.

I thought Rose was a thoughtless young idiot and felt far more for her dance partner, though I liked Lily James’s performance (and while I sympathised far more with the dupe, thought she conveyed why Rose behaved the way she did well.)

Edith, you lying liar, you never at Peterborough. I still hope Sir Anthony crosses paths with Michael. Has she any idea of how epic the storm she’s going to pull over her head is going to be?
