Summary: All right, maybe the impression wasn’t exactly positive.

--------------------

At age sixteen, Lavi’s world was turned upside down. Originally a street rat who roamed the streets of Dresden, he found himself thrust into the world of the Dark Organization when he decided to steal that shiny object from an unaware gentleman traveler by the name of Theodore.

When he was brought to the headquarters, he remembered how belittling it felt to be there, how he wanted to run back home, never to be heard of again. The end. Except, they would never let him get away, especially after they found out that he was part of the Bookman clan. He never thought his value would increase that much.

That was when he moved a second time that year, back to Germany, where he met the Bookman and was apprenticed to him.

But not before that one person made an impression on him. For a curious boy of sixteen, Lavi was one of those that no one would ever keep tabs on, sneaking away during important lessons and playing pranks on the members of the Organization, running away laughing. Except, there was one person who he could not seem to phase. In fact, he almost lost his head. Thrice.

Kanda Yuu.

The first time, it was because Lavi thought Kanda was a girl and tried to hit on him. “It was because of his long silky hair,” he whined after escaping the older teenager’s murderous intent, “I just wanted to touch it.”

The second time, it was because Lavi managed to wrap everything in Kanda’s room in toilet paper, including the flower the boy had kept under a glass cover for protection. “It was only for fun!” Lavi protested as he ran away from the sword-swinging youth.

The third time, the last time he interacted with Kanda, was when he called him by his first name. That time, Lavi gave himself a running tour of the headquarters while dodging a psychotic, Mugen-swinging Kanda. “I thought we were friends!” he screamed as he ran throughout the hall.

All right, maybe the impression wasn’t exactly positive.

When it was time for Lavi to become the Bookman’s apprentice, it was during the first snow of the season, when it was chilly. He insisted on staying until the spring came, but Komui had refused to hear such nonsense, threatening to try out his latest inventions on the reluctant teenager if he continued to protest.

That made Lavi shut up. It would be another winter spent alone. Strangely, Kanda disappeared after that announcement as well.

Only, as he headed back to his room in disappointment, he saw the familiar line of the teenager leaning against the wall, a look of agitation on his face. “Oi,” Lavi greeted as he approached the door. “What’s going on?”

Instead of answering, Kanda scowled at him, chucking a package at him. “Here.” It felt heavy to the touch. When Lavi tried to shake the package, the object inside only shifted slightly.

“Just open it,” Kanda said with a slight edge of agitation, “you’re going to end up opening it up anyway.” Lavi looked at Kanda with curiosity and before turning his attention back to the package, a smile slowly formed on his lips.

The older boy seemed to understand the meaning of the smile because he added, “It’s from everyone! Don’t think that it was from me. I don’t even celebrate Christmas! It’s your dumb tradition to give out gifts!”

Then he turned to leave.

“Wait!” Lavi said, causing Kanda to stop in his tracks, “it’s rude to just leave when someone’s opening a present, right?” He saw the older boy attempt to open his mouth and mutter something witty and fail, complete amusement on his face with each twitch of the speechless boy's face.

Snickering, Lavi ripped open the wrapping and pulled open the box. Inside, was a head wrap, a scarf and gloves. Though there was winter where the Dark Organization was located, the place was warm enough that such articles of clothing was not needed. Under all of the gear, Lavi found a farewell note hastily scribbled. In Kanda’s writing. The perfect send-off gift.

“Thanks!” Lavi said brightly, as he fished around in his pocket for his room key, “I think I actually may-“

“Don’t.” Kanda interrupted Lavi’s chattering monotonically, “I don’t receive Christmas gifts.”

Lavi stood there, mouth gaping. Didn’t celebrate Christmas. Didn’t receive gifts?! No wonder the Japanese boy was so boring and ill-tempered.

“Don’t worry about that!” Lavi called after him, “it’s all right, we’ll get you a gift, Yuu.”

And with that, the chase began again.
