Prompt:D.Gray-man, Christmas
Summary: Growing up, he had never celebrated Christmas, having been long abandoned by his parents because of his strange arm. Mana never really celebrated any holidays... and Master, well... the mere thought of that man made him sick.
--------------------
Gingerbread houses, peppermint candy canes and gumdrops littered the displays of all the stores he passed. Feet crunching into the hard snow mixed the pure white snow with the slosh of mud and water underneath. Horse carriages carried families back to their residence, goods sticking out of the back. A little boy tugged on his mother's skirts as he quietly sucked his thumb, watching the people as they journeyed on the cobblestone roads.
Children ran through the streets, ogling over the colorful displays made of sweets and toys. In one, a train traveled on its tracks, powered by electricity, the latest discovery of the 19th century. Proud nutcrackers stood next to the twirling ballerinas, which danced to the gentle twinkling of the music boxes in the displays the train passed.
A smile slowly developed on the boy's face as he walked by in marvel of the inventions of the century. The hues of green, blue, red and yellow danced softly against his white hair while his soft blue eyes continued to take in the holiday cheer that filled the festive streets. A group of carolers sang in a sweet blend of bass and treble, wishing good tidings on those who wandered the streets.
Growing up, he had never celebrated Christmas, having been long abandoned by his parents because of his strange arm. Mana never really celebrated any holidays... and Master, well... the mere thought of that man made him sick.
Nevertheless, he walked on, enjoying the scene as he carried a bag of newly bought items. Earlier, Rabi had mentioned something about Christmas, its origins (to show that he really was the Bookman's apprentice) and its traditions (and subtly dropped hints about gift giving). Though it was not like he wouldn't just leave his friends empty handed during the season of giving.
A yellow golem floated onto his left shoulder, creasing the black fabric of his uniform as he walked. A soft sprinkle of snow had fallen onto his all ready snow-white hair, lightly settling on his eyelashes before melting and falling with each blink of his eyes.
"Timcanpi!" he greeted cheerfully as he used his free hand to pull the hood over his head. "Where have you been?"
He only received a flap of the golden wings as his answer before he stopped on the street corner, waiting for the traffic to slow down before crossing. From the looks of it, he had gotten gifts for everyone: for Lavi, for Lenalee, for Komui and for the rest of the gang. Yes, he even had something for Kanda, as much of a fun-sucker he was.
The teenager will love his present, he told himself. After all, it was the sum of everything that he had done during the year: a lump of coal. (Though he failed to take into account that he was no better for swindling innocent gamblers to earn the money to buy gifts.)
When he finally returned to the Headquarters, he trudged to his room while his boots, wet from the melted snow, squeaked on the marble floors. So much for sneaking around, he noted as he slowly climbed up the stairs. Everyone should be at dinner now, he thought as he took out his key when he approached his room. When he finally managed to open the lock (it took him four tries with his left hand), he swung the door open and placed the bag on the floor in order to turn on the gas lamp.
Fsit, went the lights as they slowly grew brighter, creating a soft atmosphere as he turned around, presents now in his arms again.
"Merry Christmas, Allen!"
He took a step back, nearly dropping the presents as his face reflected a look of surprise, fear and delight upon seeing his friends in the room. Never mind that they committed a break and entry, it was the thought that counts (it is Christmas after all). A smile grew wider on his face as he took in the situation, look even grumpy face was here too. Gently setting the bag down, he walked towards everyone.
"Thanks."
Then Lenalee grabbed his arm, dragging him after and Lave and she headed towards the door with Kanda and Crowley in tow. "We'll talk later, but for now, let's go down to the cafeteria and celebrate."
Again, he smiled as he followed the group out of the room, in obvious content. How long has it been since he had travelled with anyone (no, Master did not count). Mana had never really given the seasons much thought when they traveled, so he had never experienced something like this before. This sense of belonging, this sense of security and this sense of worthiness.
Not to mention, this sense of home.
